Is it normal for them to hurt? He's not biting me, but since his top teeth have come in they have rubbed raw places next to my nipple. First it was just the left side and now I have the same thing on the right side as well. It's very sore and it's pretty painful when he latches on and it hurts the entire time he's nursing. Is this a teething thing? (the second middle tooth is just now through the gum) Is his latch wrong? Do I just need to toughen up a little bit? I nursed my older son when he had teeth on top but I don't remember it hurting like this...and he was a biter!

I do not have experience with teeth just yet. Lawson just cut is bottom two and you can just barely see them right at the gum line so far I havent been biten (knock on wood) and sometimes I think I feel them a bit but I also think I am super paranoid.

I have heard of other mothers whose LO's teeth would rub a spot on their nipple and make them tender...

Have your tried lansinoh and air drying them to help them heal up?

I would also try different positions to see if maybe another nursing position would help keep his teeth from knicking you.

Good Luck!

Teeth should NOT be bothering you if he is not bitting. In order to nurse the tongue will cover the bottom teeth which prevents them from rubbing and as far as the top teeth well I dont think they should be rubbing you because his top jaw should be pretty stationary while nursing. I would maybe contact an LC or try some different positions to see if that helps.

Thanks ladies!

I think it was a teething thing. Once the second middle top tooth broke all the way through, it stopped. I think he was rubbing his gum on my boob trying to get relief from the teething. At least, me being able to feel the tooth scraping every time he sucked stopped. I'm still sore from it and cringe every time he latches on....owie! Hopefully I'll heal soon.....

i'm having the same problem. his two top teeth are in and occasionally he bites, but most of the time it's just that the teeth rub. i also have a raw spot on my nipple. i tried changing his position but it didn't make a difference.
