I didn't know whether to ask this here or on the Pumping board - Ive noticed that a lot of mamas there exclusively pump for their babies... I pump when Im going to be away from him for a few hours.

My question is this..

This Saturday my mom is watching Noah for me while I finish up my shopping. I am going to pump this week and just freeze it so it will be ready when he needs it.
When should I pump? Am I going to pump and then not be able to feed him because im empty? I thought pumping when he's sleeping would be the best but then Im worried that once he wakes up I wont have anything left in there

Help please!

It can be hard to balance, but my suggestion is to pump in the morning off the opposite side he nurses on. Usually, your supply is greatest in the morning, so you should get a good amount. If he nurses every few hours, it's your call if you want to nurse off the same breast you did earlier or the breast you pumped off of. Your milk is always being produced though, so there's no worry that there won't be enough. HTH!

Also if you can do it, pump while you are nursing on the other side, it helps to yield a lot more milk since your LO is actually stimulating your let down!

Also, if you wil be pumping to use it this Saturday, you wouldn't have to freeze it, it could be refridgerated for 8 days. http://www.kellymom.com/bf/pumping/milkstorage.html

I only have a hand held pump as I rarely pump, but I did pump a little bit to get a supply in the freezer in case of an emergency. Anyways, I would pump about 6 oz. from both breasts and then still have enough to feed Gabriella when she wanted to eat afterward. I think as long as you don't pump until your breasts have nothing left, you'll have enough milk left to feed him.
