I had a baby about 10 days ago and unfortunately came down with an infection. The doctor prescribed me augmentin and though I'm feeling better, I think it's hurting the baby's tummy. She is usually not fussy and since I've started taking it, she is fussy and wakes up often. She cries really loud and I can hear her stomach gurgling. She has a lot of gas and her poo smells like rotten eggs . I feel really bad and I'm waiting to hear back from her pediatrician to see what I can do...I'm worried that I will have to pump and throw out my milk and just formula feed her...but I really don't want to do that because we just started getting the hang of breastfeeding. Has this happened to any of you before? Have any tips? Thanks so much.

I am sure that someone like Andi will have some good advice. Have you tried probiotics for you and the baby? Are you eating anything new or different like dairy?

You can give the probiotics to the baby. If you open the capsul and mix the powder inside with some BM and feed it via baby spoon or something. Oliver had his first ear infection at 4mos and I had to give him probiotics to avoid the s/e of the abx.

I recently took Augmentin - my LO is older so didn't notice any stomach distress, but Augmentin upset my stomach so I can imagine it might also upset the babies'. Have you talked with your Dr about trying a different antibiotic instead? I've also been on z-pak while BFing with no issues...and I'm currently on Cefuroxime which is a more specialized antibiotic and might not be broad spectrum enough for the infection you're fighting but I haven't had any issues with Savannah's tummy on this one either.

How long have you been trying the probiotic? You might want to look at giving an infant probiotic directly to her...we put Savannah on one for several months b/c she was having such horrible gas/tummy pain almost from birth...it took a good 1-2 weeks for the probiotic to really kick in but when it did it almost entirely eliminated the gas & pain.

Good luck and KUP on how you're doing....
