My son is 8days old and im attempting to breastfeed but i recently had to bottle feed him and now im having a hard to getting him to take to my breast. i have an inverted nipple and he wont take to that breast. his second day home he wouldnt eat so i had to pump and feed him since he wouldnt take to my breast. pumping is a hassle. is there anyway to get him to take to my breast instead of the bottle? im having such a hard time. also when he does take to my breast he only wants to eat for like 10mins and than fall asleep and than wake up 20mins later and do the same thing. this lasts for about an hour. anything i can do?
have you seen a lactation consultant? If you do have to supplement or pump, feed with a syringe, not a bottle, this early on. You can also contact the La Leche League near you, they are there 24/7, no cost, for you.
I also recommend seeing a lactation consultant or your local La Leche League leader. The sooner the better! Most LLL leaders are willing to come to you anytime you need the help. Here's a link to help you find your local LLL group to contact them: LLLI | La Leche League of California
In your case, I might recommend trying a nipple shield to get your baby to latch on again. You could use it on just the one side that's inverted and try to latch your baby on the other side. Also, patience and persistence! Most newborns can take some time to latch on and it's not unusual for it to take 5 minutes to get your baby to latch every time that you nurse. It's hard to have patience when you have a hungry newborn that won't latch, but just keep trying! Also, catch your baby's early hungry cues, so he isn't screaming by the time you try to nurse him. kellymom.com :: Hunger Cues - When do I feed baby?
Logan had periods at night where he would refuse to latch, even though he was hungry. He would just cry and fuss, which would make me cry. It only lasted a week or two, and now he nurses like a champ. Just wanted to let you know that you are not alone!
Please KUP!

ive been using a nipple shield on both breast and he latches. now my problem is that i pumped to see about how much supply i have and its only 2oz. the dr told me today that i need to be feeding him 4oz. is this right? he usually barely finishes 2oz. another thing is, at night he wants to eat every hr. is this normal?
it seems like he eats, lets go and as soon as i put him down, he wakes up and wants more. im frustrated. it makes me feel like he isnt eating enough.

4oz seems like too much at just a week old! I think 2oz is normal at this age. Pumping is not a good indicator of what you are producing though, so throw that out the window! A pump isn't the same as your baby and can't get the milk out like your baby does. You may get 2oz while pumping but your baby gets 4oz everytime he eats.

Yes, that's pretty normal for a newborn. Breastmilk is digested quickly so they eat frequently to get the nutrition that they need. Just keep nursing on demand, you are doing great mama! I promise you that the frequent nursing will slow down a little in the next few weeks, newborns just need A LOT of food! If you are worried that he isn't getting enough, here's a good link to help you out: kellymom.com :: Is baby getting enough milk?
ok we did an experiment because the dr said Jordan needed to be eating 4oz. He eats nowhere close to that. he barely finishes 2oz. so i feel a lot better. i have a meeting with the lactation consultant.
so when i pump and bottle feed my son he doesnt eat as often but when i actually breastfeed he eats more often. thats normal?
That is completely normal hun! Try to remember breastfeeding is not only about the feeding part, a lot of it is a comfort thing. By nursing as frequently as the baby wants you are teaching him love, respect, understanding. You are teaching him you will meet his needs and in the long run will lead to a very independent child who can take care of himself (well thats what I;ve heard...)

Nipple Shields and Nipple Shells are two totally different things the shells you wear when LO isn't feeding to draw the nipple out I had both inverted nipples and after two weeks of wearing the shells they stuck out like it was 40 below zero lol...

my milk supply has increased from about 1 1/2 oz to 3 1/2oz or 4oz. my son has been latching on and breastfeeding for the past 2 days. sometimes he still decides he doesnt want to latch and i have to finger feed, but everything is improving. im very proud of myself for not giving up.
Jordan's schedule has changed and im a little exhausted, is it normal for him to want to eat every 2 hours? he used to eat eat 3.5 to 4 hours, but now im nursing more frequently. since im still supplementing. i feel bad but sometimes in the middle of the night i dont wanna get up to nurse, i rather give him formula...am i a bad/lazy mom? im trying really hard to nurse all of the time, but im so exhausted...
You are not a bad mom for supplementing, but if you keep supplementing, your supply will never be enough for the baby. It is normal for babies to seem like they are feeding round the clock for the first 4-6 weeks, so just make yourself comfy and enjoy the bonding time. I would have water and snacks in arm's reach, a laptop with wireless internet and the tv remote
As far as evening feedings, is the baby in your room? cosleeping (not bedsharing per se) is easiest for breastfeeding.
2 hours is very normal at his age. During the nights, it was hard at first but then my body would program itself to know I had two hours to sleep and if he slept a minute longer, it would seem like I would already be sort of awake waiting for that first cry. I watched tv, played on the internet (of course with dim lighting to not wake him too much) and my husband would sit up sometimes and talk with me so I wouldnt get sleepy. At 7 weeks we started cosleeping and what a difference. I'd just lay on my side, pull him close and nurse and when he would doze off, I'd just slide him back into his bed. It made it much easier.
During the night it would cross my mind that it would be so much easier to have dh go make a bottle but I didnt. If you supplement, you need to pump when you are skipping that nursing session or your supply is not going to be enough.
Also, try to make sure you are nursing long enough for him to get the hindmilk. 2 hours is very normal, but you want to be sure he's getting the good rich milk and not just the foremilk.
There is light at the end of the tunnel! There will come a time when you wont leak, be engorged, or nurse every 2 hours (I nurse once a night at 5am) Good Luck!
ive got all that stuff handy...lol...im nursing as we speak...lol....
how long should he be nursing? i know that the LC said not to nurse for more than an hour at each sitting. he usually nurses for about 35mins.
last night he woke up at 1 and nursed for about 45 mins than layed around....15mins later he wanted to nurse...and that lasted another 25mins
so by 3am he was still hungry.finally dh decided we should give him formula. he ate 4oz. should i be worried?
