Hi there. My name is Heather and I am mommy to Tenli and Chase. I am currently breastfeeding Chase who is 5 months old. The whole family has caught a nasty cold and I can't remember what is safe to take. Is Sudafed safe to take while breastfeeding? TIA.

You would want to avoid decongestants, if you can, they can dry your milk up temporarily. You can use Afrin and neti pots, and anything not a decongestant.

Well, of course you can take a decongestant, just be aware of the effect on the bm

Yes it is safe but it can dry up your milk temporary. After you stop taking it it should come back. I have read that the more mature your milk is the more it will dry it up so I would be wary. There are some homeopathic remedies that you can take that do not affect your milk. LactMed Search is a good resource. Pseudoephedrine - National Library of Medicine LactMed Database

Ok. Thanks girls. I'm going to mark that website in my favorites. I'm not too concerned with my milk supply dropping a little since I have a huge freezer stash and I plan on only taking a couple when I get really congested. I just wanted to double check that it was safe to take.

I worried a lot about my milk supply going down since I've been struggling pumping at work, but about 2 weeks ago I was just so sick I ended up taking a couple over the course of a couple days (just one at a time). I was having trouble sleeping I was so congested. So, for me, it was a last resort. If I was home with my DD all the time I probably wouldnt have worried as much since I would be able to nurse her as often as needed to boost my supply back up.
