My 3.5 month old has been refusing to nurse at times over the past few days. She would always take right to the breast - either for hunger or comfort - but now will scream and cry. It's not all the time, but it happens several times a day. At first I thought maybe she was upset because we've been trying the bottle (as I have to return to work) but we stopped trying that once this new behavior started. I also had her checked for ear infections as my boys had chronic ear infections starting at ten weeks. My first sign with them was fussy nursing - but her ears are fine.
So I'm wondering if it could be teething...? She's drooling a lot, chewing on everything... This saddens me because I love nursing her and I'll be going back to work in about ten days, so I feel guilt and eveything else. Ugh.
could be teething for sure. My DD would nurse MORE while teething, but other babies find it too painful, also laying down at night seems to make it more painful. I would take a washcloth and dip one end in water and freeze it for him to chew on.
DD did this around 3 months. Turned out to be just a phase for us, lasted about 2 weeks. She is now six months and is just starting to get her first tooth. Good luck and I hope it gets better for you both.
