My sd8 is here for the weekend so we have my niece to play with her. (same age)

She walks in as I'm bf'ing dd and has a sad look on her face. Then she asks...

"are you breastfeeding her because you can't afford real formula?"

Omg!! I said "yes that's why. We are really poor".

Of course I told her the truth afterward but really?
How sad is it that some kids think bf'ing is for poor people who can't afford "real formula"?

I seems like everyone assumes that formula will be given and you are almost looked down upon, or in this case "poor" for not using it. So sad that the most natural thing is looked at negatively.

wow. i have heard in some cultures (Brazil?) that breastfeeding is looked at as being for the poor person and people do not want to do it because of that assumption.

Yeah a lot of people in my grandma's generation thought that. But I didn't know people still think that. Sheesh.

Yeeks! It is so sad what people teach their kids. Not terribly surprising, though, because I believe formula started off being used only by the wealthy who could afford it, so it kind of started a stigma for breastfeeding that it was only for poor people. (Very silly!)

I asked her today why she thought bf'ing was for poor people. She said on teen mom one of the girls said she was going back to breastfeeding bc formula was too expensive and she couldn't afford it. Smh...
