Are steel-cut oats and old fashioned oats the same thing?

no - old fashioned or rolled oats are the same thing though - they are basically steel cut oats that have been "rolled" flat. Quick or instant oats are rolled oats that have been chopped up even more to make cooking them faster.

Steel cut oats take longer to cook and generally a have a better texture.

I wonder why I can't find steel-cut oats? I ended up getting the old fashioned. Do you think it'll have a similar effect?

If you have a super wal-mart by you, they carry steel cut. They are in a blue container, smaller than the regular big one of rolled oats. They are delicious
