I was going to hold off on solids until 7 months, but I think I might try in a couple of weeks when my guy turns 6 months. UGH - there is just too much information online sometimes. I was thinking of avocado or maybe bananas.
I'm curious what other people offered as a first solid. Any suggestions from experience?

We did rice cereal first, once a day for a week. Then he tried some prunes (he was backed up from the rice cereal - we've since switched to oatmeal), then some sweet potato and then some green veggies. I THINK the recommendation is to start with cereal. I've been giving Sam a taste of something different every few days. He LOVED the bananas we tried today, ate an entire stage 1 jar
Did NOT like the green beans, lol

We started with rice cereal mixed with breastmilk.
But we also found the rice cereal to be a constipator, so we switched to oatmeal cereal.
I've heard very good things about starting with avocado. We were out for Mexican food a few weeks ago and I gave Emma a little taste of the guacamole! She loved it! It was so cute!

We started with rice cereal once a day. Then added a veggie once a day, then tried fruits, then meats, then grains/breads, then dairy. DS is just over 8 months and only eats table foods now.

I started out with the rice cereal as well. Then went to oatmeal which made him constipated something terrible, so we stopped that. But the first foods other than the cereal was Yams for a week. I gave him everything for a week just to make sure of no reactions before I added another food. At 9 1/2 months he still is only getting about 10 different things, but I make his food so its much cheaper than buying!!

If you wait until baby is 6 months or older it is not necessary to start out with rice cereal or even oatmeal - LLL recommends skipping commercial cereal all together and starting out with avacodo or banana. My daughter is almost 7 months and although I did offer her some rice cereal around 5 months, she would never have anything to do with it and since has hardly eaten any solids. She will eat some avacado though and smashed fresh banana. So far she doesn't like commercial baby food at all!

I started with banana at 6 months, which she turned out to be allergic to, then moved on to pears. She pretty much eats just table food now.

I started Ernest with Rice cereal and breastmilk, but he didn't like that much. I then began adding banana baby food to his cereal and he liked that a lot better.

I haven't started anything yet (Jules is only 4 months old), but with Lily, I started with rice cereal then moved on to veggies around 6 months.

We started Vlad at 24 weeks (but just shy of 6 months) on Rice Cereal. He was a voracious eater, right from the spoon, from his first feeding. Right now, he eats about 2-3oz (this is a guess, I don't measure) of Rice, Oatmeal or Barley (which he just started) cereal for Breakfast, either Squash or Sweet Potatoes for lunch a Stage 2 container, and then Rice, Oatmeal or Barley cereal again for dinner. He also hated the runny consistency and only likes the cereal applesauce or lumpier consistency since he second stab.
I think he was probably ready for solids for a while before we started because he took to the spoon like he'd been eating for months.
I did get him on sweet peas but at the same time he got a weird stuffy nose and sandpapery & red rash on his cheeks and nose so I stopped feeding him the peas or bananas (I started both pretty soon together). It might have nothing to do with it - it was the first cold snap and I was handling out dog a lot more too. So, I stopped handling the dog, the weather got warmer (and no more heater running), and stopped giving him bananas or sweet peas.
I will try again with sweet peas on Tuesday after 3 days on the new Barley cereal.
He's eating a lot and still breastfeeding alot. He nurses an hour after eating so he's still nursing about every 2 hrs - we just added the food and he still nurses 2-4 (or more ) times a night.
