My DD is 2 1/2 weeks old and on Friday she will be going to my mom's for a few hours. I need to pump in case she gets hungry. DD eats on one side burps and then eats off the other side sometimes right away sometimes 30 min later. I always wait for her to detach herself. My question is when do I pump and if I pump and she is still hungry is she going to starve? Please help

Don't worry about it. You can actually feed off only one side for every 2 hrs...meaning anything she eats within a 2 hr span - and your body will make plenty. I actually do 2 hr sides quite often - as it help ensure the baby gets more hind milk & stays full a bit longer. If you do this - you can pump the opposite side while she is eating & it will help your let down. She will not starve - I PROMISE..... It is very hard to feel confident in your body's ability to produce everything she needs when everyone around you wants to say that every time the baby fusses it must be lack of milk...at least that is the junk I kept being told...but here we are 6 mos later & he's a total chunk...and BF still. I would suggest just doing the single side feeding & pumping while nursing if you can juggle it. The other option is to pump after she is done eating 1st thing in the morning - as it seems you are most full then. You truly can pump any time you can find the time & it will not deplete your supply or inhibit her ability to get plenty when she does nurse. You can also pump for shorter periods over the course of the day to get enough for a feeding - without worrying that you have to get it all at one time. I do all of the above..as I have to pump for while I am at work & I don't typically pump enough while I am at work to cover all the time I am gone. If you don't want to introduce a bottle yet (for fear of nipple confusion) you can also use a syringe or dropper to have your mom finger feed her & then you don't have to sweat whether she will take the bottle or that she will give you a hard time nursing afterward.

Best wishes!

I agree with the above. I also will pump and shortly after my dd will want to eat. Just know that even if you just pumped and it seems like you cannot get another drop out w/ the pump that there is still plenty of milk that baby can get out. That is why the amount you can get out w/ the pump is in not a way to determine your milk supply.

I pump after dd goes to bed since it will be at least 5-6 hours before next feeding.
