This is more of a curiosity question, but I'm due in June and just recently started leaking some colostrum (this last week). Anyway I saw my 5 month old niece yesterday and she was really really interested in my boobs for the first time since she was born. Every time she was facing me she would grab onto my bra strap through my clothes and just stare. She is not being breastfed but was for the first couple of months.

Anyway was I just imagining it because I am more aware of my boobs myself or is she sensing the fact that I'm gearing up for my own baby and interested? Just curious. She didn't seem the least bit interested in my mom's boobs for example. DH noticed too but also thought he just had it on the mind.

Well, I was just with my 6 month old nephew and he did not seem any more interested in mine, lol. He was never breastfed though so not sure if that makes a difference. However, I have seen my own children try to root on other women, like my mom when they were really little, but that was probably just because they were used to being breastfed, that was how they were held etc. I have also had younger babies try to root on me when I was not pregnant. So, I think for younger babies it is an instinct type of thing. Not sure about older babies, but it could have just been that she was interested in pulling on your bra straps. My nephew was very interested in pulling hair yesterday, lol.

I'd think it could be anything from your breasts being more pronounced to the smell of colostrum to just baby going through a discovery phase. I know lately my 18 month old has been all about my breasts, pulling my shirt up, sticking his hand down the neck of my shirt and into my bra... He hasn't been BF sine he was 5 weeks old. I couldn't tell you if it's something biological or he just happens to be rediscovering them!

This is totally not the same thing, but I have an interestng factoid to share. I've read that women who are around infants and breastfeeding babies and their moms become more fertile than women who are not. Maybe that explains how I conceived my son after holding my breastfed 3 month old niece all day. Hehe.
