Hi everyone. I'm new to this board. First off, I'll introduce myself. My name is Tricia. I am a mother of 3 girls, 4 years, 1 year and 3 1/2 weeks.

I went to the doctor's today about a birth control consultation. i originally went there dead set on have a tubal ligation. But then she told me about the Mirena IUD. Which it has me thinking. I was almost for sure I was done having children, but my fiance isn't. And once we actually talked about it, maybe I'm not ready to stop having children, just don't want any for a while.

What are some side effects those of you who have Mirena got? Has anyone gotten pregnant while on Mirena? Basically, I'm terrified about getting pregnant again. Especially this soon.

Thanks.

I will be trying it after my baby is born. I have a friend that has it and loves it. She said she had pretty regular bleeding for the first month or so but now she has a period about every 3 months and it's really light. She says she cramps really hard though and that's really been the only side effect for her.

The thing about birth control is you never know what it's going to be like until you try it yourself. Everyone reacts differently to different types. Also there are different types of IUD's. It isn't known exactly how the Mirena works. Just have another discussion with your dr about what's right for you.

I agree with you leogirl. Everyone is different and you never know until you try yourself.

I just got done with a 2 month stint with mirena. I don't think I will be getting it again. I had light cramping non stop with it. I NEVER cramped before, even on my period. That's not the reason, my reason is that it actually fell out. That was $300+ down the drain and I'm sure insurance won't help with a second.

Hope that helps some!

For me it didn't fit me, first few months were great but than I would start bleeding 3wks out of 4 so I got it taken out. I then got the 10yr iud and it worked WONDERFUL for about a year and then I ended up pregnant with twin while still in place, unfortunally that ended in mc.

Each person is diffrent I've heard good things about the Nueva Ring

I had the mirena for about 2 years, I just had it removed about a month ago so we can TTC. I had breakthrough bleeding for about 3 months, and had normal and right on time periods for the first year. Within the last 6 to 8 months of having it though, my periods started getting very light. I also had these symptoms: migraines, severe back aches, weight gain, constant vaginal infections, cramping, crazy mood swings, a little bit of depression and anger. I have felt amazing since having it removed... I will not go back to mirena after our next child. Sorry, hope this doesn't sway your decision because everyone is different and it may work out great for you. I hope you find a great fit for you soon!

I've had the Mirena twice now. I just got it removed after 5 years. It worked well however, it had weird side effects. I literally felt pregnant for most of that time. One benefit was that after the first 6 months I had no periods or spotting at all. I think it just depends on how your body reacts to it.

I've had my mirena in for almost 4 1/2 years now. I had about 2 months of what seemed like non-stop bleeding when it was placed but since then I've only had spotting maybe once or twice a year. And the spotting was literally just a few spots for a day. I haven't had any of the other side effects that a lot of women talk about. I'm just now starting to have some acne issues, but I don't think it's the IUS/IUD since it's just now starting.

I was considering going to the copper IUD from this point since I have to get this one taken out, but I'm not sure I may just get another mirena placed or I may look into more permanent options. Overall I've been super happy with it, and I'm kind of afraid to go back to how it was before I got it placed. I had super heavy and painful periods before I got the mirena.

I got the Mirena 1 1/2 months ago. My baby is now 3 1/2 months & I breastfeed. No period yet. I had spotting for a couple days when it got put in. LOTS of cramps & I still have them sometimes. I have noticed my boobs are bigger & I'm very moody. Not sure if I will keep this in if my moods are like this...

I don't post here very often, but I just wanted to give my two cents. =)

I will never get Mirena again. Please remember, like the other ladies said, it affects everyone differently. But I will never get it again because mine got embedded. I was having spotting 2 weeks out of every month and I was pretty moody. I had such bad cramps with it sometimes, which is something I never really had before. It was stuck so well that my doctor was about to give up and tell me I had to have surgery to get it out when she finally got it to give way. I went back on the pill. That's just my experience with it! Good luck!!

I've got the mirena, I've had it for 3 years. Mostly, I like it, but as other have said, it's different for every one. My cycle can be anything between 20-40 days, which can be frustrating, but it's very light.

I had my Mirena for almost 4 years and loved just about everything about it. I had never been pregnant or had a baby before I had it put in, so the insertion was TERRIBLE, but other than that, no complications and really no symptoms. I didn't have cramping or bleeding, and I actually was one of the lucky people who didn't have a period the entire time I had it. I started my period about 3 weeks after I had it removed and we conceived our first baby about 2 weeks later

I dont post on this board often but i'll give my opinion on it. I have had it in for a year now and the things i like about it is I dont have to worry about daily birth control, and i dont have a period.(I have had 3 in the 1 year and very little spotting in between), the things i dont like about it is my fiance can feel it (ive got the strings cut 2x) and so it takes the fun out of being intamite, and i have gained about 60lbs with it(which i dont need any extra weight on me at all)
I am going to see if my dr. can cut the strings shorter and if things dont improve i may have it taken out to get my tubes tied which i was going to do when the 5 years was up. I have 4 kids and am now certain i do not want anymore.

This is an old post, but I'll throw my experience. I got it December 2010 (4 weeks PP). I bled heavy for the first two months and have been spotting every day since then. I feel like I am PMSing with no end in sight. Cramps, bloating, very moody, etc. The strings randomly poke me throughout the day which is uncomfortable. Dh says it rubs and feels uncomfortable to him too. I've started having headaches every day now for the past two weeks and randomly have chest pains. I would like to have one more baby... just not until we are ready so I'm sticking with it even though I hate it.

I have it and I hate it. I hate the negative side effects I've had with it. I have gained a lot of weight and I am never happy always crying or angry and the smallest thing will blow my fuse. I am always moody my periods since having it placed are hell and I feel anxious and not like myself since having it placed in my house it's nick named the devil inside me by my hubby. I don't want more kids yet but I know that I don't want all the pain and effects I've had with the mirena either so I'm seriously thinking about having it taken out and finding a better method of birth control. Though sadly I have liked not having to remember to take a pill every day

Ive had the 10 year Non-hormone IUD (paragard) twice now and I'm scheduled to get another one in place next week.
My periods were normal. No pain or moodiness. And when we got it removed I conceived immediately. Also It's great for breastfeeding because it doesn't have hormones.
Good luck with your contraceptive options.
