Hey there! Im a mother of two boys (5 & 1) and having a girl in about two weeks. My husband also has a 13 year old daughter. My husband & I of course dont use condoms but dont want to eliminate the possibility of children in the future. I am considering my BC options and really considering an IUD but not too sure on the differences between Mirena or the copper T. What are some side effects some of you experienced or have heard with these? My main concerns are of course weight gain, acne, & implantation of IUD with breastfeeding.
I am on the Mirena and it's concidered one of the best birth control options out there. I have experienced some nausea and bloating, and irregular bleedings. But overall I'm really happy with it and feel very safe regarding an "ooops" baby.
Mirena contains hormones, so it comes with any of the usual risks of synthetic hormones (pregnancy symptoms like nausea, dizziness, weight gain, blood clots, breast cancer, depression, moodiness, etc).
Copper has no hormones, so the risks are non-hormonal. Heavier, more painful periods is a common side effect.
Both IUD's come with a risk of becoming expelled or perforating your uterus or cervix. Both types can also contribute to secondary infertility later on because they both work by causing inflammation to the uterine lining. This inflammation can cause scar tissue to form in your uterus, which can make it difficult for a baby to implant successfully. Both types can also cause sporatic spotting/bleeding.
I was told Mirena would not affect my breast milk when I got it. It did! I got it around 4 week, my supply went down soon after. I removed it at 9 months because I couldn't stand it and my supply has shot up very noticably. My body did not handle Mirena well.
Ive had the Mirena for 3 1/2 yrs and loved it until this year. The first couple years were great, no sickness, no weight gain, after 6 months, I barely had a period at all, I loved it. Lately though I have been feeling sick, geting sick half the time, around each ovulation and period. I feel emotionally out of sync and feel like its the hormones. Im getting it out as soon as I am more confident in TTA charting. My fear of getting pregnant soon is outweighing my mirena side effects at the moment...
Thank you *Kiliki* for my awesome siggy!
