LOL, the marathon went well and my body is recovering. I went into this marathon knowing that my training partner would have problems with her IT band. She said it was better, but she really needs to rest it, not run at all for awhile so it heals. The weather was perfect! The first half was great, we were having a great time, laughing, following a pace team. I thought the 5 hour pace team with an average mile pace of 11:27 would be good for us. So we follow them, I feel like we are running a bit faster than that, but figured that it was maybe just adrenaline. About 5 miles in, my friend checks her watch...10 min miles. Not good. You have to stay slow in the beginning or you pay for it. So I tried to slow our pace, but she was fired up and I'm fairly positive we ran the first half at less than 11 minute miles. I felt great, but mile 11 she started hurting. Mile 16...I knew it was going to be bad. She had to do a lot of walking, some very slow jogging. She cried, vomited once, and laid down on the ground (against my advice) twice. I'm going to admit, part of me wanted to be free to go on on my own and I was a little irritated for a short time, but I didn't think she'd finish if I did that. Plus it was her first marathon, I wouldn't have run it if she hadn't talked me into it, so I stuck with her, urging her to keep moving forward, and that she'd finish somehow. At mile 23, I knew that if I didn't run I'd not be able to run through to the finish and she insisted that I go on. So I did at that point. I ran the last 3.2 miles to the finish, and crossed the line while my family was there to see it. That was a first because in Chicago, there are too many people for the kids to go, and DH hasn't been able to get to the finish line because of the crowds. They even said my name over the loudspeaker as I crossed. I waited and my partner did cross the finish line, running So we did it. This wasn't exactly how I had intended on running this marathon, but I had a feeling it would go this way. Not her fault, she toughed it out when I wouldn't have. This was her marathon, October is mine. I will be running for time then. Im positive I could have finished just slightly under 5 hours had I run on my own, which will be my goal in October. But overall, it was great, I can now say I've run 3 marathons! And I get a month off of training before I start in again!
