I've been reading a lot about this over the last few days, and I think this is something I'm giong to start doing. More like, this is something I tend to do anyway and now I know what to call it. I've complained here before that I am never hungry for breakfast. In fact, eating breakfast makes me either feel bloated and lethargic for several hours after, or I feel like grazing the rest of the day. So I tend to naturally fall into a pattern of 12 hours (or more) fasting daily, when I eat to appetite and skip breakfast.

Another reason I'm interested is because the standard advice of "six small meals" doesn't work for me at all. I feel constantly hungry eating this way. I would greatly prefer to eat two 900 calorie meals than six 300 calorie meals, for example. Days when I eat this way I feel fuller longer, and experience fewer cravings. Also, when trying to eat small meals thoughout the day, I start to feel like my life revolves around food.

Anyway, I thought I'd see if anybody else here follows this protocol or has any thoughts on it.

I intermittent fast. Usually somewhere around 18/6 (18 hour fasting). I've never been big on eating breakfast and with this diet I'm generally not very hungry most the day so I don't eat until 2 or 3 pm. I have a big lunch/dinner then a snack around 8. IF works better for me. 3 or 6 meals a day makes me hungry all day and prone to overeat.

No I haven't heard of the term...and I do not think I could do it myself...because generally I cannot eat that many calories at once....my stomach will not handle it and it only makes me want to throw up if I eat too much in a sitting...500-600 is about my max (this is like a meal not snack type stuff where its easy to get to 900 I am sure we could all eat 900 or more in snacks alone and be fine...well not fine but you know what I mean! LOL) But I say as long as you are getting all your calories in for the day....its not like you are under-eating or starving yourself....I really do not know much about this to really comment otherwise....

I've not heard the term either, but I do think it's important to figure out an eating plan that keeps you from feeling hungry all day. For me, that is small meals/snacks that always contain protein & fat, as well as eating enough fiber. I try to avoid eating carbs/sugar alone. Anyway...I'm glad you've found something that works!

I've heard the term but never knew exactly it was. Hope it works for you. Unfortunately I'm one of those that can eat a meal and then have another one 2 hours later...not cool! GL!

I'm also thinking to do the 16/8 and probably a weekly 24-hour (dinner to dinner) because I've read that the longer fasting can have a positive effect on hypertension, which I have. Since I am exclusively pumping for John (he never learned to latch) I will know immediately if this happens to lower my milk supply.

It's worth a try. Hopefully it works out for you. I think it's really helped me.

I've been really trying to listen to my body more. Eating when I'm hungry, stopping when I'm full. That happens to work out around a 18/6 but I try not to stress about the exact times. If one day I'm feeling hungry at 11 instead of 2 I'll wait a few minutes and drink some water to make sure hunger is what I'm really feeling. If it is, I go ahead and eat. Sometimes I'm not hungry until 4 or later. It just depends on the day.
I don't think I could do a 24 hour. In the past when I go too long I very suddenly hit a point where my body is like "omg I need to eat NOW!!"

I have heard of this but I don't know the exact details of how it works. I won't do any type of fasting because of my history with an eating disorder. Six meals a day works really well for me. I do think it probably works. It's just not something I'm willing to do because I worry it will trigger bad habits/thinking.

I've heard of it, but didn't know exactly how it works. I could never do it because I have low blood sugar, and if I go more than a few hours without eating (besides overnight, but then I eat first thing in the morning) I always get very faint.

Is ths safe and or healthy?
I feel like I should know this... And don;t they say starving is a bad thing to your metabolism?
I am honestly hoping it's not bad because I swear this is what my body wants to do. I feel like I force myself to eat and then it snowballs when I didn't even want to eat in the first place!! Breakfast is a big one! People say all the time about how important it is and how overweight people skip breakfast so I don't and I swear it just is a slippery slope from there. And i am NOT hungry for a few hours after I wake.

There are actually a bunch of studies showing that IF (intermittent fasting) has a lot of health benefits in addition to helping you burn fat. The skipping breakfast thing is a myth.
Eat when you're hungry, listen to your body. Forcing yourself to eat when you're not hungry isn't going to have any positive effect on your metabolism.
This is a really good article about some myths and stuff out there, worth a read I think.

Lucy, that was my concern, too. It's just a fact that everybody is different. Some people do really well eating every 2-3 hours. I'm not one of those people! I kinda thought my first 24-hour fast would be difficult, and I was prepared to go ahead and break the fast if I felt I needed to. I never did. So far the 16/8 fasts have been very easy for me.

6 small meals has to work for me sometimes, because I have to get on the diabetic diet eventually if I want to not become a diabetic, but it doesn't work for me for loosing weight normally. Normally it just maintains for me. The loosing I do better on the two large meals and a small breakfast, I try to follow the car requirements at breakfast of the diabetic diet, so my "breakfast" is often just a glass of orange juice.

Since I need to eat at night to sleep cause of the reflux I often go longer in the "morning" before I "eat" I am allowed raw veggies up to 100 calories between getting out of bed and having a full meal.

My sleep habits are changing right now though.. I HAVE to go to bed and get up at decent hours because I'm staying in the hotel with DH. I'm taking more Melatonin (Dr approved) to knock myself out faster (I have no biorhythms)... this means less time between laying down and falling asleep to get hungry. I didn't actually make myself something to quel the pain until 4am... I went to sleep at 11. That's record for me! Didn't eat again until I grabbed breakfast on the road at 10.

This changes so much for me!!
I tend to stay up at night LATE but they say you shouldn't eat at night so I use that and won;t eat even if I stay up until 2 or 3am (so at least 6 hours before bed with no issue at all)!
I sound naive reading my own words... "they say".

I think you ladies are right- I need to listen to MY body because this isn't working! I HATE eating breakfast. I have resorted to drinking protien powder in my coffee just to get the calories in. But i wouldn't even drink the (decaf) coffee in the morning... Just water.
The only time I can eat regularly is when I train for a marathon and that is pretty much a diet of eating everything in site

Fascinating!!

Right, IF is not about "starving". Proponents say it isn't a diet, but an eating protocol. So doing this, I will still get my 2100 calories every day (what MFP assigns me), I will just get those calories in fewer meals.

You would think an AP mom who listens to her body and the kid's body would know this! LOL! But I think I have retained so much old information.

It's hard to go against what we've always been taught. Even when what we've been taught turns out to be wrong. It takes some getting used to.

my mom is ALWAYS on me about not eating after 6pm. No matter how many times I tell her "we do not sleep like normal people, we might not even get up until FOUR PM! How on earth can I not eat after 6? I'd starve to death!" I just eat my two biggest meals, first and a lighter one at bedtime... pretty much it's lunch, supper, "breakfast". I managed to lose 17lbs with moderate exercise and not having to resort to shakes and eating regimens (my mom does PlexusSlim, A friend does Body by Vi...but both of them have cut themselves down to the bare minimum calories... screw that, I want to ENJOY my life and lose the weight thanks.. even if it takes longer!). I do take a supplement that my OB recommended (I don't discuss it on here, because most will say it doesn't work.. but since I lose while taking it and maintain while I'm not.. I think there might be something to it for me personally.. even if it's all in my head lol. )

I eat when I'm hungry for the most part. Sometimes I will let myself go hungry just so I can be sure that I am hungry and not just bored. Bored hungry goes away if I ignore it... real hungry gets worse. LOL
