I had planned to homeschool from the get go before my kids reached school age, and I used to sometimes post here if anyone remembers me, but this year I felt strongly to put my daughter in public kinder. Not sure why totally, and I really fought the feeling at first. Then I figured we'd try it and see how it all goes. It ended up being a good thing in many respects, especially when the baby came. I'm also coming away with an even stronger desire to homeschool, which may prove beneficial during the tough times of homeschooling in the future! But, recently her attitude when she comes home from school is just unbearable. And she's not in your typical kindergarten! She's there ALL DAY. . .not half day like most! She leaves at 8:30, and gets back home at 4:30! WAY too long for my 5 year old! She's a July b/day, so she's the youngest in her class. She's not being educated there on HER level. And her teacher doesn't even recognize what her level even is! She thinks my daughter is below what she really is. The teacher is a nice person and all, but I think with all those kids, she really doesn't get a chance to really get to know Rachel and what she really knows like I can. I gave Rachel an online reading assessment test thing I found that you can do for free. . . .she tested at a FOURTH grade reading level! Her teacher thinks she's just about to get to first grade level. I was a little surprised at 4th. . .I was thinking more like 2nd, possibly 3rd grade. DH isn't surprised. . .he's like, "She knows some pretty hard words, not to mention can read out of the Scriptures!" Not sure what she reads at school, but brings home these mindless "books" to read for homework each week. I hate having to waste her time on them, but she has to draw a pic about "the book" and write 3 sentences. How do you write 3 sentences about a book that has NO plot? She reads the book very quickly too since it's simple words and short. THEN, math. . .she was adding before starting K. . .they JUST started adding in her class about 2-3 weeks ago! Up till then, they were practicing counting to 30! She could count to over 100 before K!

We were going to wait out the rest of the school year, then transfer her from public to our homeschool. . .I like to call it transfer b/c no one thinks anything of it if you move from public to private or a private to another private, etc in the middle of the year, and some people think I'm letting her "quit" b/c she's being taken out to homeschool.. . . .NO she's NOT quitting! Quitting would be going to homeschool and then doing NOTHING! Idiots! Anyway, back from my little rant there, so with everything, my husband finally gave me the go ahead to just transfer her now vs the end of the year even though it's so close! It just feels right! Why should we have to suffer with her attitude for a few more weeks unnecessarily and her continue to be bored to tears? She HATES school! In kindergarten! There's things she likes of course, but most of the time complains about it and begs me to homeschool her again. Friday will be her last day! There's a mother's thing they're doing on Friday that she really wants me to go to, or she'd already be out. . . . Thanks for letting me share my excitement!

Yea... I know many schools that do all day K and 8:30-4:30 is way to long. I'm glad you both are excited.

More and more places are all day now for kindergarten. That's way too long for such little kids IMO.

Congratulations on making the decision

I believe half days are now the exception due to the NCLB nonsence. Much too long for little kids. Advanced kids do so much better being homeschooled where they can work at thier own level. I'm sure her attitude will improve at home too.

Hmmm? I guess I assumed that most schools still did half day since on my July 2002 pg board, Rachel is the ONLY one doing full day. Everyone else on that board, with a good sampling of different states, have half day K.

Maybe she's decoding at a higher level, but it's the comprehension that was keeping her at a first grade reading level?

Anyway, best of luck!
