I thought my youngest was still at the "recognizes a few words she sees often (her name, her sister's name, mom, dad, etc.) and sounds out three letter words without attaching meaning by herself most of the time" stage.

You should have seen our faces (my oldest and me) when we played this game with her the other day:

http://www.ictgames.com/machine.html

and she went from left to right across the screen (which I also think is significant) as she said the word choices (she didn't sound most of them out...she just said them) and selected the correct answer most of the time (so she *was* attaching meaning).

I was waiting for her to attach meaning before saying she's officially "reading"...and it looks like she's there. I'm so excited, but I have a hard time keeping up with this one!

The only reason she's at this point is because she's absolutely fascinated by language and wants to do related activities for hours each day. And I think the fact that she has a big sister to look up to is a big part of it as well.

Ever since it "clicked", she has been such a happier kid.

That's great! It's amazing when you see them pick it up isn't it? Since my Emily is reading, Lindsey has been paying attention. Here at 15 months I am so shocked and surprised that she knows that the letters "say" something in her books. She doesn't know what they are, but knows they have names and can say some of them. I seriously didn't teach it to her and am shocked that she picked that out. Good luck keeping up with your kiddos too! Sounds like they are doing just great!
