I just wondered who all was going to be homeschooling a Kindergartener this coming year! I know that, for me, it will be great to have an online group of kids the same age! Alos good to compare notes on curriculums with other moms! So, If you are homeschooling your Kindergartener this year, please raise your hand! LOL

Also, if you know curriculum, which will you be using?

When will you "start" for the year?

Are you signing up with the state LEA or will you use an umbrella school? Or do you even have to sign up at all?

How old is your Kindergartener (age/birth month)?

Do you have a homeschool group that you will participate with in your area? If so, how often do they meet?

Anything else you would like to share??

I especially look forward to hearing the BTDT homeschool mom's responses who have older kids they have homeschooled!

*Raises hand* We are!!

Also, if you know curriculum, which will you be using? Right now, Wal-mart books for Kindergarten. Waiting on Explode the code and Horizon's Math. We also do Bible stories and activities.

When will you "start" for the year? We will homeschool all summer and start "seriously" when Bryce starts back to school. The umbrella school that I am considering allows you to "start" as soon as you are registered, so we can count what we do this summer toward our 180 days!

Are you signing up with the state LEA or will you use an umbrella school? Or do you even have to sign up at all? I am still going back and forth. There are benefits to each and I am still weeding through all the blah. Hoping that this thread and what others are doing and why will help me with my decision.

How old is your Kindergartener (age/birth month)? Scotty will be 5 at the end of September. He is just before the cutoff for public school. I would never enroll him in PS at this age, so close to the cutoff, but academically he is SO READY for Kindergarten. Homeschool is perfect for him!

Do you have a homeschool group that you will participate with in your area? If so, how often do they meet? Currently there is one that meets once a month. I get the e-mails, but have never been to a meeting. There are a lot of older kids there (but that means experienced homeschool moms!). I also have a mom friend who is homeschooling her 5 year old this year for K and we are thinking of starting our own group for younger kids. I know several moms I think would be interested in joining us.

Anything else you would like to share?? We are just really excited to start! Prayerfully, we are starting such a fun and exciting journey!

We will!!

Also, if you know curriculum, which will you be using? We're using MUS and ETC and a hodge podge of other things.

When will you "start" for the year? We school year round here. We've never really stopped from when we started last year. We just take off when we want to. I'm hoping to get a good chunk of Eathan's stuff done so that when the baby gets here we can take some time off.

Are you signing up with the state LEA or will you use an umbrella school? Or do you even have to sign up at all? We don't have to register until 2009-2010 school year by law. We just have to file a letter of intent and get evaluated yearly for progress.

How old is your Kindergartener (age/birth month)? He'll be 5 on July 23. My little baby!!

Do you have a homeschool group that you will participate with in your area? If so, how often do they meet? Yes, eventually. They start up in September and take off over the summer, so I'm not sure how it's going to work with us taking time off in October when we have a new little one around. I'm not too concerned with a group at this point. They are all much older groups of children anyways and I'd really like to find a group with a wider range of ages.

Anything else you would like to share? Not that I can think of right now.

*raising hand*

Also, if you know curriculum, which will you be using?
Math-U-See Primer, Bob Jones Kindergarten, & some Explode the Code

When will you "start" for the year?
Sometime at the beginning of August

Are you signing up with the state LEA or will you use an umbrella school? Or do you even have to sign up at all?
We don't have to do anything here.

How old is your Kindergartener (age/birth month)?
Justin will be 6 mid-October.

Do you have a homeschool group that you will participate with in your area? If so, how often do they meet?
We have joined a group, but we don't really do much with them. The scheduling hasn't worked out for us. I do have a small group of homeschooling friends with ages perfect for all 3 of my boys, and we try to get together once a month or so for play dates.

In! He is our 4th.

Also, if you know curriculum, which will you be using? "Teach your child to read in 100 easy lessons" and MUS Primer

When will you "start" for the year? Next Monday. That's when I should get the 100 easy lessons book from my friend.

Are you signing up with the state LEA or will you use an umbrella school? Or do you even have to sign up at all? We have to register with the state by the fall after they turn 6 (which would be first grade) so I am not registering him this year.

How old is your Kindergartener (age/birth month)? He is 5, turned 5 in Feb of this year.

Do you have a homeschool group that you will participate with in your area? If so, how often do they meet? Yes, but we are an online support network. We have a LOT of friends who homeschool, so support is no longer an issue for us.

Anything else you would like to share?? I think homeschoolers are better than everyone else and my baby is filthy.

We are eclectic: MUS for Math, The Ordinary Parents Guide for phonics, Science will be whatever my 2nd grader is doing. Mostly just play.

When will you "start" for the year?

We school year round.

Are you signing up with the state LEA or will you use an umbrella school? Or do you even have to sign up at all?

No sign up required until age 7.

How old is your Kindergartener (age/birth month)?

Just turned 5 this month.

Do you have a homeschool group that you will participate with in your area? If so, how often do they meet?

Yes, every other Wednesday for "classes". Then the other Wednesday we are going to try to do field trips.

Anything else you would like to share??

Don't need to here..just a LOI and a portfolio at the end of the year BUT we don't even need to report her until NEXT year
How old is your Kindergartener (age/birth month)?
She'll be 5 October 28th.. she wouldn't even be in Kindergarten until the 09/10 school year

Maybe. Ry is not old enough for ps kindergarten. He isn't writing letters at all really (other than H, X, O...really simple ones). But he seems ready in many other ways. I don't know. His b-day is the end of Nov.

Will he be 5 at the end of November, Sharon? Scotty barely would make the cutoff in PS, but in HS, I know he is ready. He is writing letters - some well, others not as well. It is hit and miss. But most kids in PS K can't write letters at first, so I am not worried. That is something we are working on right now. He doesn't love writing as much as he does other things, so we will get to it when we get to it! I just LOVE that about homeschooling!

Wow! It looks like Justin will be the oldest kindergartener here. We school from about mid-August to late April, and he just wasn't ready this year. He wouldn't be in ps kinder until next year anyway, so we waited. We're not "officially" starting until the fall, but he started doing some ETC a couple months ago and a little of the MUS Primer to sort of get ready.

Yep, Justin is almost a full year older than Scotty. Scotty was ready to start last year as far as how quickly he picked up on things, but he did not "love" it like he does this year. He also did not want to sit still like he does this year. We have been working for 5 days now and it is non stop "mommy, can we do school now." I can throw it at him all day long and he absorbs like a sponge. I just hope that doesn't change for a long time!

Yes, he will be 5 the end of November. I don't really assign grades to the kids. I will just work with him where he is and if that is prek for some things and 3rd grade for others that is fine with me.

Yes and amen! I hate when my kids want to be in a grade! At church when we sign them in there is a spot for "grade". I put A+ or blue or goat or some other nonsensical thing. I tell my kids to just do their best all the time.

Well see, Justin was ready as far as absorbing the info, but as far as the writing and other fine motor skills he wasn't. He gets frustrated easily and he's a perfectionist, so when he couldn't get the writing or cutting, for example, "perfect" he would run off in a fit and just be an emotional train wreck. I decided it wasn't worth it for him to get so stressed so young. Right now he's better with his fine motor skills and controling his frustration. I think it was good that we waited.

I don't think Eathan is emotioanally ready for K this year in PS although his age would put him in PS. I just know he would retract into a miserable little boy if we put him in PS. This way homeschooling we can go at his pace and his emotions can develop as we go and he can still be my baby.

For me, it gets confusing. I have two totally different kids (don't we all if we have more than one! They are all different). With Bryce, I signed divorce papers giving my ex half the say in how I educate Bryce. He is against homeschooling. So I have one kid I have to think of in terms of public school and grade and academics. Then I have Scotty who is totally a kid who wants to be homeschooled. Today he told me he didn't want to go back to his preschool. I asked him way and he said that he wanted to do school at home with me because he "knows you love me mommy and my teachers are mean and they don't." That drives something home for me that I will love my son through his struggles when a teacher will get frustrated or just ignore him. No one loves my child the way I do.

I even had my doctor tell me I should send Scotty to public school this year because he is sending his son and his son is 2 weeks older than Scotty. I knew from day one I wouldn't send Scotty to public school this year. So what is hard for me is not labeling, not putting him in a "grade" because when I turn in my intent to homeschool thing they ask what grade. I have a headache right now just from thinking of all the stuff and the change. I get bogged down in the details....like I am teaching Kindergarten stuff, some is ahead of Kindergarten, some right on. But still, say I homeschool for 4 years and he would be in 3rd grade in ps. If I were to decide then to send him to PS, that wouldn't mean I would want him in 3rd grade! I would probably want him in 2nd grade because of his age and birthday. Public schools don't teach at their abilities though. They put the kids in a box and don't ever venture to educate outside that.

BLAH! LOL

Me me me!!! DS just "graduated" preschool almost a week ago when he officially finished his last preschool book but he's been doing K stuff for a while now so...? We had a party for him and everything!

Also, if you know curriculum, which will you be using?
We're using a mix of things: Bob Jones for bible, 123 Read for phonics and reading, bob jones handwriting (but looking to change that to abeka handwriting as soon as we get our stimulus check!!), Abeka for math, and a mixture of other fun things I find for science topics like lapbooks and things.

When will you "start" for the year?
We've already started since we go year round. At least this year. Dh told me he really thinks kids need summers off to just be kids...so we'll see if we continue to school year round.

Are you signing up with the state LEA or will you use an umbrella school? Or do you even have to sign up at all?
We don't need to until he's 6 which will be first grade- when the time comes we'll probably sign up under an umbrella school.

How old is your Kindergartener (age/birth month)?
He turned 5 in March but has been doing some Kindy work since last fall.

Do you have a homeschool group that you will participate with in your area? If so, how often do they meet?
I just joined a local group out here but they are off for the summer so I'm hoping to get him into a "for fun" class with some other homeschoolers once they start back up again.

Well if we moved over to the states I think Sarah would still test into Kindergarden, probably about the mid year level. She is way older then Justin. My kids may have learning problems though so I guess thats another category. Technically we are doing first grade, but a lot of stuff she is still at the K level. Learning to write letters, on lesson 14 in primer. So am I allowed in or should I but out lol.
