Hi, I'm Amanda, mom to Austin (10), Lily (4) and Connor (3). I am hoping you ladies can help me with some questions I have I am currently a preschool teacher for a private school and we use the A.C.E. PACE curriculum. I am wanting to homeschool my children next year ( I need to give my children more attention with their school work that I can give them while I am teaching) My questions are, does anyone use A.C.E? Do you go through a school to get the work or do you buy them from somewhere independently? I am struggling with this decision and would love some feedback from some other homeschooling moms Thank you in advance!

We don't use that either, but wanted to congratulate you on your decision and welcome you to our world. I just talked to a woman on the phone today who uses that program and is very happy with it.

Good luck!

I love the program and my son has been in it since preschool, I just don't know how to get started when it comes to home schooling with it

I just noticed you are in FL. What part is that? The lady I talked to today said she pays $250 and her son is registered as a private school that he does at home. Do you want me to find out where she sends the check?

I am near Orlando. Is she in Florida also? I know that I can go through the school I teach at now and it only costs $75 a month but I have to take him in to test, I want to find out how I can do it myself and send it in when I am done. Do most homeschoolers go through a school?

ETA: I forgot to thank you all for the warm welcome!!

Welcome! I also taught in the school system and am making the transition to homeschooling next year. I will look forward to having another "newbie" at this to learn with --- and also all the support that these wonderful ladies give here.

She and I are both in N FL, near Tallahassee. Most homeschoolers do not go through a school. By Florida law, what she does is private school. What most of us do, to comply with the law, is send a letter to the superintendent with the child's name, DOB, address and say "we are homeschooling this kid". Then, each year, you send in a letter from your evaluator that says he was homeschooled successfully this past year. Your evaluator is the person who you show your work to. Just stuff from throughout the year that shows progress.

If you use ACE or something where you register with them, you are a private schooler (not that anyone would throw you off this board) but you do it at home. You don't do the evaluation or have to send anything to the county to begin with or each year. Personally, I think the homeschool laws here are very user friendly and there is no need for these "private schools", but some people like them and that is great!

Who would be an evaluator? Is that the parent? I do not want to go through the school! I researched a little bit about our county and it says they have to approve us to homeschool When I was talking to some other mothers they acted like it was hard to be approved I guess I have a few months to decide what i am going to do, I just feel so frustrated.

Thank you all for the welcome!

Hi, welcome to the board! :-)

ACE has a section devoted to home education, right here: http://www.aceministries.com/homeschool/Default.aspx Maybe that would help? By the looks of it you can enroll with them, or they will offer support to independent home educators as well.

I almost used ACE, and know someone who did. She liked it and she was under a private school. I do believe she just turned in the end tests.

Anywho, welcome and I look forward to getting to know you!

I was going to home school in Tampa when we lived there. An evaluator is a person you show your child's work to so you prove that they've been taught that year. FL it has to be a FL certified teacher. This can be ANYONE if you talk to family and friends someone probably knows a teacher. if you have a BA / BS you may want to take one of the alternative routes to become a certified teacher. Also support groups generally have a list of evaluators possibly the school does too.

Here's your laws if you want:

Thank you so much for that info! I am on my way to being a certified teacher, I only have 14 months to go I just wasn't sure if I was aloud to be their evaluator.
