At what age do you begin a formal spelling program? So far with Bailey I have just used Explode the Code and was under the impression that's all he needed. Once we are done with it (hopefully at the end of Gr. 2) I plan to use Rod & Staff English and spelling. I am starting to wonder if I should start doing more spelling sooner than that although when he is writing I am often surprised at the words he spells correctly without having been formally taught them. He reads very well, is he picking up spellings of words just from reading books?

Guess I'm not totally sure where to go from here and if my original plan of waiting until Gr. 3 is good enough. Thanks for any input!

From everything I have read Grade 3 is the appropriate grade to start with. Talen is ending 2nd grade now and we just started spelling a few weeks ago.

Jack started formal spelling in 2nd grade. Jared started a little bit of his 2nd grade work a few weeks ago, but we're taking a break right now. When we start back, he'll be starting his spelling.

First grade. Ani's a natural speller, Cameron is not.

Oh yeah! I forgot Justin will be starting a very low-key spelling (sight words & such) for 1st grade.

BTW, spelling for us is:
day 1: weekly spelling rule and some activity with their list of 10 words (alphabetizing, dividing by syllables, etc.)
day 2: write the words
day 3: review the words
day 4: spelling test, write misspelled words 3 times each
day 5: write misspelled words in sentences; nothing if all the words were correct

It's pretty low-key spelling at this point. Cameron also does Explode the Code and Ani does MCP Word Study.

We tried to start in 1st, then we tried in 2nd, then we tried in 3rd - which might have been fine with a different program. DD is doing great (of course a little behind, but progressing quickly) now in 4th grade. I think if we had found 'Spelling Power' last year in 3rd, she would have been fine. She was/is a late writer so spelling before 3rd grade just wasn't good for her. Now she is doing well in spelling and greatly improving in her writing too:)

I didn't start "formally" until this year with Reilly (third grade) but I think that's because I couldn't find a curriculum that I liked. We used "A Reason For Spelling" this year, but I'm not going to use it for 4th grade because it's very teacher intensive. We switched to Bob Jones Spelling, which I really like, so both of The Kids are going to do that next year. (first and fourth grade)

We used WP LA this year and they had us doing spelling in Kdg. But I wouldn't call it formal. And I didn't follow it exactly. Mostly it wanted here to practice spelling the word list for the week (in whatever way you wish) and then test at the end of the week. That's it.

When she is older I will probably start Spellwell, but I'm thinking at least 2nd grade.

We always asked them to spell things after they could sound out words like cat, dog, etc. But we start in first grade. We haven't had any problems yet.

We began with Lindsay in first grade. We are using Abeka and she seems to really enjoy all of the games that go along with the spelling lessons.
