I think I've found the solution for math. I'm dropping Abeka right now (well... probably in another week, actually). I'm going to call Mardel's on Monday and order R&S 1st because I just got a good look at it, and it's definitely old school. It's the way I was taught. Very straightforward, not a lot of overwhelming pictures/colors, not introducing add/sub as "everything that adds up to ___", but rather "everything +/- ____". It stays on one set until it's mastered, but still teaches all the other stuff (money, temp, etc.) at the same time.
Don't get me wrong... I still like Horizons. The plan is to start with R&S right now, finish early next year, and the switch to Horizons 2 (even though R&S isn't as advanced as Horizons). He'll have time to finish both next year doing a lesson a day.
