Wow, I think I spelled that wrong...must be preggo brain!

Anyway, does anyone or has anyone created their own curiculum or do you use a packaged one?

Is your curiculum a strict structure or is it free and relaxed???

Edward will be starting Kindergarten in the fall and I'm using this opporunity to start his homeschooling. He wants to learn how to read to I've decided on a little project to help him learn the sounds of each letter and writing each letter and such. But what else should I do with him?

I am not structured and my curriculum is not set. I got various workbooks and study guides from Amazon and local stores, etc.

I couldnt afford a predone package so I made due with what I could afford. So far, so good.

I started with a prepackaged kit, but it didn't work for us. Now I make my own curriculum, and it works great.

For the K level -

Reading, writing, and math are really the only three things you "have" to do (assuming you've already covered the basics with colors and shapes and such). Some people do science, social studies, foreign languages, art, music, etc., but that's completely up to you. There are free resources online if you want to use them. Learn to Read with phonics is great for reading. If you want to work primarily on the letter theme, look at Brightly Beaming Resources. There are lots of free printables online for writing. Math should be counting and basic addition/subtraction. Some curriculum companies will teach way more than that (calendar, time, temp, measurement...), but as long as you get a good number foundation, you'll be able to pick up everything else in 1st grade. You can teach as much or as little as you want at this age.

Okay, at this point, I've looked into pre-packaged curriculum (<--Ha! There we go! ) but I think making my own curriculum is better for us finanically and interest-wise. I always felt my struggles in school were due to the lack of interest in the subject on my part and the lack of different teachings on the teachers part. I know how Edward learns and I can cater to that and through his interests. I have always believed that children learn best when they are interested. Thanks Ladies for your opinions!
