We are doing Apologia Science's Astronomy book this year and we read about comets, meteors, etc. so I'm going to take my munchkins outside tonight to try to see some meteors. This one is caused by the earth traveling through Halley's comet trail, I believe. So as the dirt trail from the comet enters the earth's atmosphere, the pieces of rock and dirt burn up and it looks like "falling stars" (meteors). It would make a good school lesson, so just thought I'd share.
There is supposed to be another one around Aug 9-13, I think... and that one is supposed to be 50 meteors per hour, so that sounds like a good one.
Our van ended up in the shop for repairs during the meteor shower so instead of going to Gramma's out in the country like we planned on, we had to stay home. We live in a small town, but in town enough that the lights drowned out the stars and we didn't see one meteor. Oh well. We will go to gramma's for the next one if we can.
