How often do you do field trips??? We have a few that we are planning for, but I know there's always going to be that random thing that pops up spur of the moment that would make for an awesome field trip. How do you document for these? We are planning on doing a tentative lesson plan one week at a time that way we can change things around if we need to. So I guess I would just jot down for that day the field trip and the purpose of it?
I generally don't worry about a purpose for a field trip or even a tie in to what we are doing in school. Instead, I take pictures and put a few in their portfolios with a note of the date and where we went in the field trips section (while I have to make portfolios for the county, I actually make them for keepsakes for the kids). We don't have a set number of field trips we go on. Some months we go on 2-3, some none. Just depends on what comes up that we are interested in.

We rarely go on them. At least not ones that involve needing transportation to get there. The kids and I walk everywhere here, because there is no bus system(which I absolutely loathe). There's not really anything all that interesting within a mile or two from our house-or even in this city, lol. I'd say we go on maybe 1-2, if even, during the school year that require leaving the city.
But when we do take them I sometimes use them for supplemental hours. Marking down on their records which subjects and approx. how long we spent on them. I don't do it for all of them. They don't necessarily tie into what we're studying, but you can make anything educational
I'm the admin for a K-4th grade HS group with a field trip emphasis (although we do other things, too). We do a minimum of 1 field trip per month during the traditional school year. Sometimes we do 2-3. We don't really do much during the summer, because everyone's busy, it's too hot, and all the cool places are crowded with PS kids.
