What is the best curriculum? There are so many out there, I don't know where to start! I'm still trying to come up with the pros and cons as well, so any help/advice would be appreciated! I will have a 3rd grader and 3 1st graders should I decide to start this next year.
I depends on what you are looking for. I started by looking at the district learning standards so I knew where to start. Then I knew what academics I wanted our curriculum to cover. Do you want an academic curriculum, a laid back one, a religious one? What is important to your family?
We are using Singapore Math for our math curriculum and I love it. I taught first grade math for many years and Singapore math makes so much more sense than any of the popular American curriculum. I chose an english curriculum that has a lot of writing because my daughter loves to write.
Honestly, there is no "best" curriculum... although I'm pretty sure we all have our favourites (and some people's favourites have changed over the years too...). There are best fits for your family, but not an overall best curriculum in general. There are some that are more advanced than others, some that are less academically rigorous, some that are literature based, some that are text book based. What sort of style of learning and teaching would you be looking for? It is easier to send you in certain directions when we're familiar with the style of education you want to give.
I agree! There's no such thing as a "best", even within the same family. You choose what works best for you. Tell us a little more about what you're looking for specifically. What have you already looked at? What did/didn't you like about it?
Pros & cons will also vary. Write down all the reasons you want to homeschool, write down all the reasons you don't, and compare them. At the very least, jump in and give it a try to see if it works for you. Is it hard? Sometimes (especially at the beginning). Is it fun? Sometimes. It's whatever you make of it! I love it, or else I would be looking at other options.
Do you know the law where you live? Do you need help finding that information?
Ditto what has already been said. There is no one best program out there as people have different learning styles, so what is best for one child may not be what is best for another.
Are you looking for secular or nonsecular? Any kids with learning or other issues that would affect schooling? Does your state require anything special of you?
I'm looking for an academic-based curriculum and possibly religious based. I have twins and DH has a daughter the same age from a previous marriage. The more I look into it, the more I think I probably can't afford it. Maybe I'm just not looking in the right places.
If there was one best curriculum for everyone there would only be one curriculum
A Beka might fit your needs.

You mean you think you can't afford homeschooling at all? Yes, you can. It's possible to HS completely free (other than the cost of supplies... which you'd have to buy for classroom use, too, so it doesn't matter).
I'm headed out of town in just a few minutes and will be gone over a week. Hopefully these ladies can point you in the right direction for free/cheap options. If not, send me a pm and I'll get back to you as soon as I get home.
In some of our up above pinned topics you will see one for Resources. Check that on out it has some links to freebie site. There is also a site called curriculum share where people post things to swap. You just have to post an offer of something first. So if you dont have any curriculum to offer you could post a book of any kind or something like that. If you have any other questions feel free to ask :-)
