I am not sure what it is called in any other state but michigan does testing every year to see where your child is across the board with math, science, reading, writing, social studies..

Well this year they have changed the cut scores for everyone..

My son was advanced in reading and math 3 and 4 grade but now with the new cut scores he is only proficient .. if it was the same as last year he would be still in the advanced score level..

They say they are doing this to make teaching more rigorous so that the children are more ready for college and high tech jobs..

Okay... my son is advanced.. and he tested advanced in 2nd grade.. I am sure he has lost a bit of that from being held back from learning at his pace (which is why this is just one more thing on my list of thank heavens I pulled him out) but even with the new cut scores, if I use the new system and go back he is only proficient with everything they tested him in..

writing he failed fabulously- I am not surprised, His hand writing is sloppy and he has an easier time telling you things then writing them down.. it is just hard to watch him lol!

I guess what I am trying to ask here is.. Are there any other state tests that they are upping the criteria to be considered pass/fail? and with all of the problems the schools seem to be having (no child left behind) with keeping the kids taught to tests instead of teaching.. HOW THE HECK IS THIS GOING TO HELP?

Thankfully, there's no testing requirement in TX, so I really can't answer you. I choose to do private testing annually for my own information, but it's not the pass or fail type, it's the "see how far you can go before you hit a wall" type.

I think they need to get rid of the testing here and let the teachers be teachers.. I think they would have a better time keeping students learning instead of focusing on teaching to test.. such bull.. glad glad glad I am not dealing with them anymore.. (the list is building!)
