Part of Elijah's science course this year was to take care of caterpillars and see them through the cocoon stage to the butterfly stage. But those darn kits are so expensive! Well, we were blessed to have an infestation of tomato plant eating caterpillars and we kept one and he did make a cocoon and he did break free from it today! We have a moth ladies!

This is the little caterpillars that caused us such grief!

This is the moth on the green plastic plant and the cocoon is in the bottom of the picture.

The kids had so much fun wondering about what it would be. We set him free today and now he can populate the world with more monsters to eat the tomato plants!

How cool, I bet the boys were excited to see their caterpillar become a moth.

They really were. But it was more like magic as he made his cocoon and emerged during the night each time. They went and got a new one off the tomato plants to do it all over again.

Good Job!!! How wonderful that you were able to do it for free!!! I loved looking at the pictures. Now, I am wondering if I should go look on my MIL's tomatoe plants for a worm .

Oh wow.. lol..that's pretty cool. And that was a really great way to save money! I probably would have never thought to go look for a free one outside. Was this a First grade project? I'm sorry I couldnt remember what grades your kiddos are in.

It was a first grade project.

Maybe I should plant a tomato plant next year, in case I need one of those little buggers for a project. B)
