What is the first thing that people say to you when you tell them that you homeschool (or that you\'re going to homeschool, if you\'ve not already started yet!)

For me it's usually, "Really?!? I could never do that!"

"You are incredible" is the most common thing I hear.

Usually it's something like "Aren't you really stressed out???"

"Aren't you worried that they're not going to be very well socialized?" or "Aren't you worried you're not going to give them the stuff they need to know in life?"

I HATE being asked that! Because some people just jump right to conclusions I actually got into a fight with some of my family members about it.

LOL - I guess I've probably heard all of those as well! The "socialization concern" usually comes up later in the conversation, but it's always there!

your kids won't be able to socialize then
They will be missing out on so much
Are you certified to be doing that
You are too young to do that

Now, "too young" is not one that I've ever heard before!! It would be interesting to ask someone who said that if they thought someone your age was "too young" to teach in public school.

As though you just told them that you were in a cult!

I have heard almost everything that all the other ladies posted but the one that bothers me the MOST is when people say something to the effect of "I couldnt handle having MY kids around all the time! I dont know how you do it!" and they say it in FRONT of their children.

That makes me nuts

Yes, when I'm asked if I'm totally stressed out, it's always followed with something to the effect of having the kids around all the time. I just want to ask them, if you didn't want your kids around, why did you even have any???
Another question along those lines: "When do you have any time to yourself?" I find time for myself after the kids go to bed. I just happen to be able to spend time with my kids, too.

I haven't started yet, but I'd love to. I usually get "I'd love to be able to stay home and do that"

Now, I'm afraid THAT would be the one response that would really offend me!! And trust me, I don't get offended easily!
(Of course, knowing me, I'd think they were joking and just laugh it off instead of telling them off like they would deserve!!)

Yep, All of the above for me too.... One I get a lot is "Is that legal?" I am like "Um, no..I am breaking the law and telling you about it" The next thing to come up is always the socialization....so then when I take the time to explain all the positives of homeschooling...then I get the "I don't have the patience" which is fine...I don't expect everyone to love it the same way I do...but they say it almost defensively...like I am judging them..when they are the ones that started the "judgement" in the first place.

No kidding! "Yeah, I'm just ITCHING to get arrested and I thought that homeschooling would be the easiest way!" LOL
And as for patience, I'd have to say that there are some days that I don't think I have the patience!! But we muddle through anyway!
