For those who have already taught your kiddos cursive handwritting, how old were they? My ds (7) keeps saying he wants to start learning cursive, but I think he needs to improve his manuscript before we even begin thinking about cursive. His manuscript is not that great, so I think another year of practice would help.

I think all kids are different

Devin's manuscript has improved since we have been learning Cursive.
but I don't knwo if that is typical or not.

we do a very child-led approach to learning... so i'm of the opinion that if your ds wants to try to learn cursive even if his printing isn't so great yet go for it i think people are much more receptive to grasping new things when they really *want* to learn them, kwim?

I think you should go for it if he wants to learn it. A lot of boys cursive is better than their print.

I've even heard of some places doing cursive first. So if he's showing keeness I would take advantage of that and start the cursive now. I think any form of writting/drawing would probably improve a childs general tideness in writting overall.

I started my boys last year....2nd and 1st grades. Madison started in the 2nd grade in public school. Patrick doesn't have the best handwriting either, but seems to be writing cursive better than print. Just buy a workbook on it and see what happens . That's the wonderful thing about homeschooling I guess .

I never thought of cursive handwritting improving his manuscript. Or being better than manuscript. Now that I'm thinking about it (after reading all your posts) he may do very well with it. He loves to draw and I think he would look at it as being a form of art. I may have to look into it for this year afterall. Thanks for all the responses.

I teach manuscript until 1st grade. We did cursive this past year for 1st and it was great! And yes it did improve his writing overall. He has the prettiest cursive writing.
