We had our first day of school today!!

It went pretty well. We covered a chapter of history plus a story to go along with it. We started working in our handwriting books. We talked about bird study and began practicing how to sketch birds for nature journals. We read a chapter of the Burgess Bird book. And we took a look at the first few pages of our Latin book and practiced some new words. It all went pretty smoothly even though my 3 yr old kept whining for cookies and my 1 yr old kept climbing up onto the table (she just wanted to participate ) I think the kids had fun.
They are still so stuck on the public school way of doing things though. They insisted on riding their bikes to school this morning so after eating breakfast and getting dressed they said "goodbye" to me and rode their bikes around the lake and back home again. Then they came back and said "good morning teacher." And I couldn't get them to stop raising their hands.

We are all heading out now for another bike ride and then maybe off for ice cream to celebrate our first day!

We had our first "official" day of school on the 18th, and the boys were so excited to continue. Today...on the other hand....I could NOT for the life of me get my oldest to write, or do his math. And my youngest wanted to do nothing but read (I am ok with that, but I wanted him to work on his counting). We went to the library and played some educational games on the computer (I don't know why they couldn't do that here, but they insisted they had to go to the library) and read a couple books. We took out some books and read them in the field. We did get a lot done today, but it was NOTHING that I had planned, what do you do in this case?

Oh, lol BTW. Congrats on your first day back, I didn't mean to hijack yout thread.

Sounds like a great first day! It takes a while to "detox" your children from the school mentality and believe me, there will be days in the future when you wish that they would have continued with raising their hands... I swear I am gonna make a "talking stick" or something for school hours so that my kids stop talking over top of one another and making me crazy....

*wanders off thinking about making a "talking stick" as a first day of school project and starts searching through the packed boxes for the craft supplies*

That was one of the cutest first day stories that I have heard...about riding the bikes to school . That is precious.
My kids have taken a long time to get out of a lot of the public school ways. Today was our first day of this year....the first school year to start out homeschooling. It went well .
I'm glad your day went so well.... !!!
