Hi. I am an infrequent poster but my blood is boiling right now and I need a 2nd opinion... I have 3 children, one in pub school(2nd grade). Last week I received a phone call from the attendance person saying that they had not received my daughter's $20 enrollment fee for next year. YES, we have to pay to enroll in PS where we live!! I informed her that I had in fact paid the fee in cash directly to the office. She told me to look for my receipt and call her back. When I paid the secretary, I was asked if I needed a receipt but I declined because I feel she is an honest person and I didn't think I needed it. I still think that the secretary is an honest person. I just feel that she probably credited the money to something or someone else. (Her desk was a mess)! I felt like I was accused by the attendance person of being dishonest which totally rubbed me the wrong way. I felt it was in my best interest to not speak back with her but instead with the person whom I paid. I tried calling her 3 times but was unable to reach her. Needless to say, I was never contacted back about the matter... I get an email from her teacher tonight(tomorrow is the last day of school) saying that the office has asked that she hold my daughter's report card because of unpaid registration. What would you guys do? I want do the correct thing that won't cause conflict for my daughter but on the other hand, I REFUSE to pay this twice. I don't think that anyone should have to pay at all to register for public school. I should add that I would prefer to homeschool her again next year but it isn't in my husband's heart to do so. Thanks in advance!!

Kim

I'd talk to the secretary in person.

What does DH say about the situation? I would go there if you could tomorrow and talk to everyone in person. They can be to buzy for the phone but not an upset parent. I would have a long talk with your husband about trying home school if they refuse to believe you.

Yea...make sure you get proof of payment on things. I have learned that the hard way as well.

I would talk to the lady you paid and take this up with the principal if needed.

I think speaking directly to the secretary is the first step. But if it isn't easily resolved, I'd probably just pay the $20 again. *shrug* I don't really know....

I would absolutely not pay the $20 again. I would talk with the secretary in person. If she says she can't remember, I would take it up with the principal. And I absolutely would make a scene if I had to. I know that I, personally, could afford to pay it again - but there are many people in ps who cannot afford that and by standing up for yourself, you are standing up for anyone who may encounter this.

Oh, and NEVER leave any transaction without a receipt. Boy have I learned that the hard way!

How can they hold her report card from this year for a fee that goes towards next year? That doesn't make sense to me.

Our registration fees for Public school here are close to $200! I never paid it right away because it ticked me off that I was paying that much for public school (something my taxes were supposed to have taken care of.) And besides it's not like they knew we'd definitely be enrolling the next year. You could change your mind, move over the summer, etc..

Wow, I don't know what I'd do. I guess start by talking to the secretary in person. If, after that, they still insist that you didn't pay, I don't know what I'd do...

As for having to pay for public school? That blows my mind!

Thanks guys for all of the great opinions. I spoke with the secretary personally and she claims that she doesn't recall the situation at all. I was told that I could have the principal call me at home. When my daughter came home this afternoon, she didi have her report card with a note attached. It said that the principal had allowed the teacher to send home the report card but they still had no record of payment from me and they would look into it. This is just one of the many problems that I have had with this school. On the upside, my husband has seen the many frustrations we have had to deal with and has decided to give homeschooling another try. Thanks again!!

Kim, that is GREAT!

And if I had to pay 200 - 400 bucks for public schooling...it would be a no brainer! HOMESCHOOL!
