Hope everyone had a great weekend!

Need help: I have never planned a unit study before. Alena loves the workbook method. She has been asking a ton of ?'s about jail. Last night I asked her what she wanted to learn about and of course it was jail! How do you create unit studies the scope of them. Any suggestions on what a study on jail could entail? Police? What an odd topic. The minds of toddlers!

Thanks ladies
Patti

How old is she? Do you have an empty jail cell in your local county jail? Could you take a trip there and see it? Or just go meet the police? I'm thinking she's pretty young, so I'd focus on police and what they do and basically why people go to them and how they work.

Yep, I agree with heather- I would turn it into more of a community helpers/police thing and touch on the topic of jail while you're there.
Try and gather as many links as you can- I just google my topic idea such as: 'police unit' or theme. Search for some good books that discuss what the police do- you could even link this unit to another unit on firefighters or something else. I would focus on the helping aspect of police, not the crackdown aspect What a funny mind kids have!
I wonder if our link queen has any on police/community helpers??

Sarah has seen one of the heavy jail locks from our local lockup because my dh is the towns locksmith and has had to repair the lock a couple of times and one time had to send away for a new one.

This is probably too old, but you could teach her about the Wild West and jail, kind of mix it with history.
