It's official. We're home OWNERS! Dh just paid the balance on our house! All those weeks of overtime with no days off was worth it! We ended up paying it off 2 years early. I'm so excited. We're not sure what we'll do with the extra cash each month, but it'll probably be 1 of 3 things: go toward paying off the van early, save up to remodel the house, or put into a savings for the kids. I'm voting for remodeling!

That is SOOO awesome! I am thrilled for you (and jealous, too). Why don't you go tell the ladies on the financial planning and budgeting board! I know there are some there with a goal of being complete home owners and they'd love to hear how you did it.

Thanks. We're totally excited! We really didn't do anything special. When we bought the house, we got it really cheap because: this is the house I grew up in; my dad's company relocated him about 10 years ago so they bought the house; it sat empty for 2 years with hardly any interested in buying; we were able to talk them WAY down on the price because they were just ready to sell. We only financed it for 10 years at 10% interest. A couple months ago dh's company was offering lots of overtime; so, he worked about 2.5 months straight with no days off and we saved every cent of the overtime pay. We ended up saving enough to pay the balance on the house with some left over!

Oh! And every month for the past 6 years when we made the payments we always sent just a little extra to go toward the principle.

Hey, that's all something! You could have just pocketed the extra money or spent it on stuff. It took discipline to do what you had to do, but look at the incredible reward

Wow, Rebecca! That's a huge payment!

We aren't totally in love with our house right now, but I'm really hoping that we can use the extra money to remodel. When we bought this house it appraised for 50k, but we bought it for only 35k (told ya we got it CHEAP ). If we follow our remodeling plans that we made years ago, we should be able to resale if/when we decide to for 150-200k. I know we *should* put the extra back for the kids, but I have been counting down the years to have the house paid for so we could start remodeling. With all the overtime money, we just deducted it from the checkbook register balance so it looked like we had less than we actually did. We'll probably do the same now with the usual house payment.

Our *rent* payment on our townhouse is $1375 a month. We were paying $1418 at the apartment and it went up to $1518 (one reason we moved). Townhouses here run in the $350-400K range and houses are $500K+, so we'd be paying a LOT more if we bought a house. I don't know how people do it here.

Yeah, I think housing is alot cheaper here than in many parts of the US. I saw a picture of a house that someone from another message board was buying in New Jersey. They were buying it for 500K. I was stunned when I saw the pictures because it looked to be equivalent to our house that we bought for 35K!!

We have friends at church who are moving to central TX in October. They are looking at homes and figure on getting a big place with 5-6 bedrooms (who knows why... kids are grown) for around $100,000. I'm jealous lol

We were moving to TX and we were going to be able to double what we have in as far as size of house and have lots of acreage. It didn't work out for a number of reasons, but I couldn't believe how much cheaper everything was out there house wise. I was so disappointed when it didn't work out to move. FL is NOT a family friendly state anymore and it is getting harder and harder to live on soley one income! We will make it though. I'm still SO happy for you guys!! (and still a little jealous )

Totally do-able here.
Tisha, too bad it didn't work out for ya'll to move to Texas. Even with the HOT summers, I wouldn't want to live anywhere else. I'm still so amazed at how much more expensive housing is in other parts of the country.

Yep, with the equity in our home we were going to be able to build a 2500 sq ft home and get 30-35 acres. We were looking around Groesbeck. Oh well, a girl can still dream.

OMGosh that is too funny!! We looked in Thornton too! We looked all around Groesbeck, but the 2 places my Mom went out and looked at were in Groesbeck. Well, I'm waiting on God to put me where He wants me, but I know He wants me here right now. Who knows what the future holds! It may be Groesbeck!
