Any ideas? We're taking a break from our MUS right now to work on math facts until he (Jack) can know them without counting on his fingers! He learned this bad habit while in public school. They didn't work on math facts. Ever. They encouraged them to use their fingers. I dealt with it all last year, but I think that by now he should know his math facts without having to add 7 + 3 on his fingers every time he sees it. He should just know that 7 + 3 = 10. Today we used the flash cards to drill doubles. After drilling for about 5 minutes, I used the flash cards and played math hangman. By the time we were done, he could tell me all the sums for the doubles within 2-3 seconds. No counting. Tomorrow I'm planning on reviewing doubles and drilling +0's & +1's. We'll continue throughout the week and until I know that he knows them. I'm just looking for other ideas besides hangman every day. We'll go back to MUS when I feel confident that he can do it without counting on his fingers.

Have you let him play with the blocks? For some reason making equations with them helps kids be able to just know the facts.
