So I enrolled Emily in Ballet. There is a teacher who has permission to use our community center as a dance studio. She is teaching 3-12 year olds. I am so excited for her because it is so close and not terribly expensive. There will most likely be a dance recital in the spring and Emily is thrilled! She also has been doing her "preschool" books for hours at a time some days. I can't pull her away. Its great. When we are outside she takes the sidewalk chalk and asks me to help her with her letters. She is such a smarty.

On another note. I had a LONG 2 1/2 hour talk with my SIL- the one with cancer- about homeschool and why in the world I want to do it. It was actually a really good talk because she and I can talk without getting offended and we listen to each other. It was good because I found out from her that MIL seriously thinks that Emily and I and the baby sit inside all day, never go any where and that "poor Emily" is bored to tears and has no friends. I guess MIL worries herself sick thinking that Emily will not get to have any fun. She is excited that she is taking dance because she thinks that is all the time she gets with friends. I guess because I have said that I will make sure that Emily gets out with other homeschoolers and that I have a homeschool mom that I am friends with, MIL got the assumption that we ONLY play with homeschoolers and that we ONLY do things that are homeschool related. I told SIL that was SO far from true! I said that we are around other homeschoolers because everyone else is in school, but we are just as much friends with them as we are hsers. I told her that I don't BAN Emily from playing with other kids that go to school and told her that Emily will do other extracurricular activities with kids that aren't hs. It was such a long conversation that I can't possibly remember all that was said. In the end though we still don't agree with each other, it felt like we respect our right as parents to make these decisions. And that we realized that the scare that the family has had has been from assumptions made and that they just don't understand. I live far enough away that she just never sees what it is we do, that most of the time in the summer especially, you can't get a hold of us because we are always outside or out finding an activity. Its so hard to have family sometimes, such a blessing and yet, they take so much out of us.

I bet Emily will absolutely love ballet! And that's great that you were able to get across what sort of things you do and why. The crazy thing is it wasn't all that long ago that people would never have dreamed of sending their 3 year olds away to school. Now it is so common that people are viewed as strange if they don't!

Aww, I bet Emily will be so adorable in ballet! It sounds like you had a great talk with your SIL. I'm so glad. Maybe she'll pass on that information to your MIL now.

I just can not understand why people think homeschooling = never go anywhere, never go outside, or bored to tears. Sorry your mil has been thinking that way. I hope your sil puts her straight.
