Jared got a butterfly garden from my dad & step-mother for his birthday. We've been observing them turn from caterpillar to chrysalis and waiting for them to turn to butterfly. Well, 2 of them "hatched" today! I expect the rest of them (3 more) to break out within the day or tomorrow. The boys were so excited! I hope we can catch it when one of the others breaks out so we can watch the process.
Alison, how do we know when it's time to release them? Also, we put fresh flowers in the bottom of the garden and used an eye dropper to put sugar water on them (that's what the "instructions" that came with the butterflies said to do). How often are we supposed to do this? As soon as I put the flowers with sugar water in the garden, they clumsily fluttered to the bottom to start eating. It was too cute to watch them try out their new wings.
They're Painted Lady butterflies, BTW. I'll take some pics later to post. They're really pretty.

How lovely, they sound like so much fun! I so want to do butterflies. Lol guess the only way I will get any is to catch some as they don't sell them here except for really expensive Monarch chrysalises. Can adult butterfly’s be kept in those butterfly houses or is that only for caterpillars?

Oh very cool! We didn't do the house's so once they emerged and their wings were dry we let them go.. we only had them as butterfly's for a few hours, once they could fly they left so I am of no help..lol
