This is off topic but...Do any of you have Santa and if so, do you feel right about it? We have always had Santa but each year I feel like I wish we had never started it. If you have Santa for several years, is it fair to your kids to stop? I am having these feelings but I feel like I don't know what to do...Any advice?

We never had Santa growing up and I am really glad we didn't. We have decided not to do it with our kids. We are religious and for us we didn't feel right about it. That if one day they find that Santa isn't real, will they wonder if Jesus is pretend also? I get questions like that from my little girl and we don't even do Santa, I don't want to confuse her more. I don't know what to say about getting rid of Santa once it has begun, that would be hard for me.

That depends on what you mean by 'have Santa' If you mean do we make out Santa is real person, who actually brings presents for them..then no. I decided before I had kids that that could be a slippery slope and come back to bite us. We do, do Santa though, but only as a pretend character. I told my daughter when she was quite small that it was just a game and that Santa was just a man dressed up in a red suit. The Easter Bunny we don't do at all, but we don't do eggs either. I have told her others do believe these characters to be real though and she must not say anything to other kids about Santa or Easter bunny not being real because it could hurt there feelings.

I think if I had started the Santa is real thing then changed my mind I would continue but downplay it somewhat.
As soon as they started asking the pointed questions I would tell them the truth.

This is kind of what we do, but not of my own choosing! Last Christmas, my little girl really got into seeing Santa everywhere we went and hearing about him all the time from our family members. We have never brought up Santa with our daughter, but she latched right on to him! If she ever asks me if he's real (when she asks me, I mean) I will tell her the truth right away.

Santa brings presents, but they know that Santa is us. They know Santa is the spirit of giving without any need or desire to be thanked. Giving because you want to. They also know the story of St. Nicholas and who he really was. When the kids were small we were neutral about Santa and let the kids decide for themselves. They enjoy pretending that Santa is a person who brought the gifts.

This is how we did it as a child and this is how we do it with our children. It is about the spirit of giving and how Christ gave his life for us. We do Santa all in fun, but Eathan knows that Christmas is ultimately about the birth of Christ.

I think that what all of you guys have said is what I should have done from the beginning. My kids think that Santa really does come into our house and leave presents!! I am sure that my 8 year old knows but she hasn't really questioned too much. I guess this will be the year that I give them a more solid explanation. Thanks guys!

We don't stress Santa in our house but the kids do have Santa come and bring presents. They also understand that Santa is different all over the world thanks to their German heritage so they don't put much thought into it. For them he is just a fun character for the holidays. If you ask my oldest what Christmas is really about his answer is also Jesus.
