Hopefully as more thoughtful and insightful studies are performed to understand the causes of autism, the baseless claims against vaccination will cease.

to most of the non-vaccinating parents, autism isnt their only concern. but whos to say that heavy metals dont aggravate the autism-prone children [the ones with a lot of glitches]? its a fact that heavy metals and other chemicals have been increasing as rapidly as the rates of autism. just a thought.

Actually, that's not a fact. The only heavy metal that has ever been present in vaccines (ethyl mercury) is virtually eliminated from the pediatric schedule. If you are also referring to aluminum, it is a soft metal, not a heavy metal. Nevertheless, the aluminum found in vaccines are compounds of aluminum salts, not straight aluminum. It's also ubiquitous to the environment: if you eat, drink or breathe, your body has aluminum in it right now. The amount in vaccines is are drops in the bucket by comparison. Plus it's water soluble and excreted from the body rather quickly.

When the MMR vaccine as discontinued in Japan, the one that was thought to cause autism, autism rates did NOT decrease.

I read an intersting theory that a vitamin D deficiency during pregnancy could be the cause of increased autism rates.

And one more thing, this is purely anectdotal, but I work as an occupational therapist. Many kids on my case load definently have autism, but then there are some that we question the diagnosis. One kid was put on services because he cries anytime his parents tell him to do anything. Other than that, his academic achievement and social skills are very normal for a three year old. I sometimes wonder if it is over diagnosed.

This is also anecdotal but the most severe case of autism that I worked with was a child who was NOT vaccinated.
