Just in case you didn't know chicken pox and shingles are the same thing. Shingles is only something people who have had chicken pox can get, but.... My mother was diagnosed with shingles Thursday. I am not encouraging anyone to or not to get this vaccanation, but what I am warning is that your child who has not had chicken pox or the vaccine, could get them from someone who is contagious with shingles.

To get it from someone who has shingles, they either have to physically come in contact with the sores or the person with shingles has to have the flu like symptoms that SOMETIMES comes before an outbreak. Personally, I rarely get the flu symptoms, my outbreaks are usually brought on by stress. When I was working in an orthopedic clinic I had an outbreak and went to the community health nurse. They did some research and said as long as I did not have any flu like symptoms and kept any sores covered I could not pass chicken pox on to my patients or my kids. I've had three stress induced outbreaks this year and my two little ones haven't caught chickenpox yet and Im a SAHM, so we're around each other all day every day (nor did I have a patient break out either... I always asked the parents first, mostly to make sure mom already had it in case mom was pregnant).

After I got chicken pox when I was little I would get shingles almost every year after. They finally quit on their own.
