Any advice? My son is not vaccinated. he is 23 months old. I am planning to visit my family in about 2 weeks. My mom just found out her friend at work may have whooping cough. I dont know what to do. Going and vaccinating my son would be great if i knew he would be protected. But from what i am reading he may not. I have his bday party planned for mid sept while im visiting my family. I dont want to ruin his bday plans, but i am afraid my mom and the rest of the family may get whooping cough from her friend as its highly contagious. I am trying to read more about this, vaccinating or not, how bad it will be if a almost 2 year old does indeed contract it....I am also pregnant. i have had the vaccine myself. but could still be a carrier i know. I just feel a bit anxious....and thinking i may have to reschedule our trip and bday plans.

vaxing him is not going to do a thing, it is a series of vaccinations. I would take lots of vit d and be careful who you are around. at his age it is not as scary as an infant/newborn and probably just more of a hassle than anything else. And a lot of the people who are getting it are vax'ed, but it is a different strain.

I totally agree. I would just take extra precautions with whom you are around.

I don't know much about it, my kids have not been vaccinated for it either and have not caught it. I would likely reschedule also just to be safe. Oh and btw, my second sons name is Kai also lol. I never heard anyone else with that name until now. Good luck hun!

Just wanted to ask what happened? My kids both had WC when they were 3 yrs old & 5 months old (same time) and for us it was so mild I can hardly believe that it was even an illness, let alone one that people are so afraid of. I thought they didn't catch it until I had titers done. They coughed maybe 3-5 times each night if that & for bursts of 5-20 seconds. There was no gasping for air or whoop. Just a hacky cough. The ONLY thing that seemed like what people say about WC was that it hung in there for about 4-6 weeks. Other than that - it was NOTHING like I anticipated. I am not saying it is ALWAYS like that - but they were both still nursing at that point, getting lots of good outdoor activity (it was summer) and so good Vit D levels & they weathered it so mildly I thought maybe it was seasonal allergies initially.

sorry i have not been on since writing this! i have been so busy, we just had a baby in December...My mom's friend was told she did not have whooping cough. and no one else had any symptoms. So we went and all was fine. The more i keep researching the more i am anti vaccination. It is interesting that a baby can get a very mild case of whooping cough! why dont they ever mention that? everyone makes it sound like it will KILL if a baby gets it. and PrettyMOmmy Kai is a good name! Haha i had never heard of it when i named him, but now i slowly hear it. in both boys and girls and its more common in Hawaii. my husband is from there and i sort of looked at hawaiian themed names and came up with that. i like it but im biased! =) my 2nd son is Noa. w out the H kept it a hawaiian name!
