Hi everyone....just wondering if any of you were told that new guidelines recommend AMA pregnancies (especially over 40) are to be induced at 39 weeks?

Iím only 22 weeks, but when I meant with my midwife yesterday, she told me of this new guideline. She did say, that of course no one can force me to be induced and we can play it by ear as the time gets closer, but she was obligated to tell me of this new change. She states the concern is that the placenta deteriorates at a faster rate in women over 40, so it is best to induced. Iím terrified of a C-section and from what Iíve researched induction very often leads to C-section so I really donít want to be inducedÖbut donít want to harm my baby boy either.

Just wondering if you all are being told the same thing.

TIA!

Well I'm in the over 40 category and no one has said that to me at all. In fact they haven't mentioned induction at all. We've talked about whether I want a c/s or vbac, and since I have GD that she might have to come early if she's big like my DD was, but that's based on baby's size and not my age.

I had my daughter at 41 last year and I was never told that. I had issues with during my pregnancy---SCH, gestational diabetes, influenza at 37 weeks. My doctor said she didn't want me to go past 40 weeks, when I reached 39 weeks she said everything looked good and she let me go to 40. Had I not had her by 40 weeks I then would have been induced.

Thanks for you're experiences, I looked up ACOG guidelines and didn't see anything there, I know I have awhile to think about it, but as of now, I'm thinking at least wait until I'm 40 weeks to be induced, of course that's if I haven't gone on my own and everything looks good on all the monitoring they'll be doing after 36 weeks.

I hadn't heard that. I'll be 38 when I deliver. If you have concerns about induction I would do your research but there is no way to know how prepared your body will be at 39 weeks. I induced number two because of size at 39weeks and I was 4cm and 75 percent effaced before the induction which is why I agreed to it. My body was ready to go. I have been offered an induction or c section at 39weeks this time but do not want to induce unless my body is at a similar point. I was on the lowest dose of pitocin and really all it took to start labor was breaking my water.

We are due on the same date!

I'll be 40 when I deliver, and no one has said anything about that to me. And you are correct, any interventions lead to increased risk of c-section. Interventions often (usually!!!) lead to more interventions... very often leading to c-sections. No, no one can "make" you have an induction. My grandfather was born natural in 1922 at 13 pounds, to my 4'11" great grandmother, so even big babies can come out as nature intended.

I will be the odd one out here. I was 39 with my 3yr old, 40 with my 2yr old, 41 with my 1yr old and 42 with my 6mo old. With my 3,2, and 1, I was induced at 39wks, for exactly what your MW is saying. I saw a high risk OB, and although I had no other issues except AMA, they strongly recommened it for placenta issues. I did induce with my 3yr old, overall good experience (I did bleed ALOT, not sure why) had my 2yr old naturally at 38.6, and my 1yr old at 37wks naturally. My newest baby came at 35.6 due to placenta abruption. We both almost died. Now alot of this risk for me personally was due to how many children I have carried. He was my 8th living baby. The more baby's, the higher risk for placenta issues. Age alone is not enough to make that call IMO, but you should be monitored very closely at the end (32wks and on for weekly NST's.) to make sure baby is doing good. I do believe my 37wk'r and 38wkr came because my placenta was just done, and certainly my baby came because my placenta just detached. Research it, ask lots of questions, and if you decide to go to 40wks, just make sure to get the extra monitoring. Alot of dr's that are not high risk do not share this theory, as they do not see what aging placentas can do. High risk dr's see more issues because this is ALL they do, catch 20. Good luck!

I have not heard that at all, but perhaps that is because my placenta has always (even when I had my first baby at 19) aged faster than it should. and with the exception of the last baby all my babies were born before I was 30. The last little guy was born when I was 38 and he was induced 8 days early because he had failure to thrive and my placenta was really aging. I suppose that they will watch me with this one as well but I have never heard of being induced just because you are AMA
