Egg donation is different from surrogacy, but has very similar things as well.

Egg donation can be a difficult choice. You are not carrying the child, but you will still be biologically related. You will have a child out there in the world related to your own child that may or may not know anything about you. Some situations of egg donation are open in that you are friends with the people you are donating for and therefore have a relationship with them. Or things can be very closed and nobody will know anything. They will know your "physical" and "mental" characteristics, but they will not personally know you.

In my gestational surrogate cycle we are doing right now, the egg donor is not known. They give my Intended Fathers profiles, they pick one and the donor goes through the cycle with us, but we never see her or talk to her or would be able to pick her out of a crowd sitting in the waiting room.

Some clinics are great about egg donation and are open to many types of women. Some clinics are very very strict on who they accept.

If you were asked, I am assuming it was by a couple that you are friends with or a family member? First step would be to talk it over with your SO. Let them tell you how they feel as this will be something that you can't take back once it is done. If a child is conceived, it will be related to you no matter what. So make sure your hubby or spouse is very okay with it.

2nd, make sure that you are physically able to do this. Talk it over with your doctor.

If the people you are doing this for already have a clinic, they will want you tested for STD's as well as making sure you are physically able to do this. Some clinics have strict rules for weight, BMI and all of that.

After that, comes the legal parts. Making sure contracts are in place, covering everyone and making sure that no matter what, everything is situated before contacts are signed. Including and not limited to, contact before/during/after the donation and possibly pregnancy. Whether or not you want to be involved in the child's life after they are born.

So...lots of stuff here I mentioned, but its pretty much the basis of what you need to know. If you have any more questions, feel free to ask. I know this was a lot at once.

That's awesome you are considering egg donation for someone you know. The gift of helping someone become a family is about the most amazing gift that can be given.
