An Australian woman born without a uterus will undergo a transplant to receive her mother's womb in hopes of giving birth.

Melinda Arnold, a 34-year-old intensive care nurse, twice tried unsuccessfully to use her mother as a surrogate. Adoption attempts also failed, the Telegraph reported.

Arnold's mother, Denise Allen, said she worries about the risks, but knows her daughter is determined.

"She was three years old when she first expressed a desire to be a mother," Allen told the Telegraph. "It has been a long journey and both she and Andy have suffered a lot of sadness and disappointment."

The couple has been married 12 years.

While this is not the first attempt at a human uterus transplant, none have resulted in successful pregnancies.

Arnold would need to wait 12 months after the transplant before attempting a pregnancy through IVF.

The mother and daughter are expected to undergo the transplant sometime next year.
