Carolyn and Sean Savage always wanted a big family, but they never knew what they would have to go through to fulfill that dream.

Things started off well with the couple’s family building. They had two sons via natural pregnancies, but the second pregnancy had been difficult. Their third child, a daughter, was the result of in vitro fertilization (IVF). Again, the pregnancy was difficult, and this time the baby was premature. Still, the Savages wanted more children and, hopefully, children of their own. They still had embryos that could be implanted. The question, however, was, following two difficult pregnancies and a premature delivery, whether or not Carolyn would be able to carry a fourth baby safely to term.

Deciding to go forward, the Savages learned that they were pregnant in February of 2009. Ten days after receiving the joyous news, however, the couple got a heartbreaking—and shocking—phone call from their doctor at the fertility clinic: The clinic had transferred the wrong embryos into Carolyn. After the shock wore off, it began to sink in for the Savages: They were pregnant with another couple’s child.

The Savages said they never even considered aborting the baby. Not only was the baby a precious life, in general, they realized that the baby, although not the Savages' child, was a miracle baby for another infertile couple.

“It was a stunning moment,” Carolyn said on NBCs Today Show.

Even with risks to her own health, Carolyn and Sean went forward with the pregnancy, delivering Logan in September 2009, and returning him to Paul and Shannon Morell after his birth.

“There is no way we could possibly repay them for what they have done for us,” Shannon said.

After the birth, the Savages knew they could not risk another pregnancy, but they did have remaining embryos. So, they decided on surrogacy. And, their dreams were realized with twins Regan and Isabella.

Today, the couple says that the birth of Logan has been a blessing for their family, giving the couple an insight into just what their surrogate gave to them.

“The first time they were placed in our arms, I thought of Shannon, and what that was like to receive Logan,” Carolyn explained. “Even though we understood what we were doing, I think until that moment happened, we didn’t really get it.”

The Savages hope that their story will inspire others, not discourage them, from building their families.

“I think, if anything, we want to be somebody folks can look to and see what’s possible,” Sean said.

The Savages have written about their journey in their book, Inconceivable.
