Intrauterine insemination (IUI) is a procedure in which sperm are placed directly into the uterine cavity through a catheter near the time of ovulation. This procedure is most commonly performed when there are problems with the sperm, such as low count or low motility, or an incompatibility between the sperm and the cervical mucus. It can also be performed to overcome problems associated with a man's inability to ejaculate inside the woman's vagina due to impotence, premature ejaculation or other medical conditions. IUI increases the chances of pregnancy because the sperm are placed directly in the uterus, bypassing the cervix and improving the delivery of the sperm to the egg.
IUIs can be performed either with the partner's sperm or with donor sperm. It is recommended that the patient abstain from sexual intercourse for two to three days before the procedure. In some cases, it may be necessary for the female to take medication to induce ovulation if her cycles are not regular. The male will provide a semen sample one to two hours before the procedure is to be performed. The semen will be washed, a procedure in which the sperm is separated from the seminal fluid and the quality of the sperm is analyzed. Following the wash, it is time for the insemination procedure, which only takes a few minutes and does not cause much, if any, discomfort for the female. The doctor will insert a small catheter into the uterine cavity through the cervix and inject sperm directly into the uterus. The patient is able to resume normal activity immediately following the IUI procedure. If pregnancy does not result from the initial IUI, the procedure may be repeated during the following cycles.

Has anyone had a successful IUI story? How many IUI attempts does it usually take? Do you have to take different meds before the IUI or does it just depend on the fertility issues you are dealing with?
I was diagnosed with mild endo earlier this year. I have an appt in a couple of weeks with a fertility specialist who I am assuming will have us try IUI (as long as we are determined to be good candidates). My dh's sperm is normal, we actually have one child conceived naturally. This endo diagnosis was a huge surprise but I knew something wasn't quite right with my body plus we have been ttc for 2 years now with no success.
Thank you for reading this post. I would appreciate hearing anyone's story if they are in a similar situation to mine. I have been researching online & see conflicting reports about women with endo using IUI to conceive. Some sites say it works and some sites say it is a waste of time. My endo is mild & does not affect any organs, so I am hoping I am in a good category for pregnancy with IUI.
Best wishes to all who are ttc with medical assistance!

I had a successful IUI last year after one attempt. I was put on a round of clomid 50mg first and I took a shot of ovidrel to trigger ovulation. I do not have endo, my husband had a very low sperm count. My sister in law also had a successful IUI after one try, though their issue was also low sperm count. Good luck I hope it works out for you.

I had my first IUI yesterday (12/29). I wasn't sure what to expect, so I thought I'd write about it here in case anyone felt the same way!
Like I do every month, I had my 50mg Clomid CD 3-6, a follicle check CD 13, then an hCG shot on CD 15. The IUI was CD 16.
First hubby made his "deposit" at 8:30am by driving it into the clinic, where they washed it, separated the good from the bad, and put it into a warm bath. His count was very good, they said. I showed up at 11:00 for the IUI. All I did was lay down while they inserted a speculum, just like for a pelvic exam, and then my RNP took a thin plastic catheter, inserted it through the cervix and into the uterus, and injected the sperm. I didn't feel a thing. I was told to lay down for 10-15 minutes then I was free to resume normal activity.
Just in case, I laid there for 20 minutes before leaving, and I didn't do anything strenuous that day. I have an appointment for a serum progesterone and TSH on 1/5 and then the hCG on 1/15. This is going to be a long 2 weeks! C'mon BFP!!

<span style="font-family:Georgia">Hi I am new to the boards and found this site on google.
We had our first IUI done on Dec 28....now is the dreaded wait. I am due this Thursday the 11th. Since Fri I have been getting nause, but I am so afraid my mind is playing tricks on me. DH asks daily any signs? He made me buy pregnancy tests on Fri but I am waiting until Thursday or after to test...I am just so nervous.
I also wanted to ask, for those that have had this done before did you expierence bleeding afterwards? Mine was later in the evening.
This looks like a friendly board!

Hi I am new to this board but not new to trying so hard for a baby.
My dh and I have been through one cycle of IUI before and it failed. We have also been ttc for 2yrs 8mth and had a m/c not to long ago from a blighted ovum. My question is does anyone else's husband have a count of 3-12 million and if so have you had sucess with the IUI? Im so nervous that we wont be successful with IUI because of his really low count.

I am new to this board.I have Endo but in August '05 I was able to get pregnant and have a healthy baby.Me and my son's dad are no longer together and I have since gotten married(me and my son's dad were never married) but it's not as easy to get pregnant as it was the first time.My husband has been through SA before and they told him that he had a slim to none chance of having a child. My question is would the IUI work with his semen and also how much does the procedure cost and does insurance cover it?I really want another baby and I am just trying to see what all of my options are. Thanks for letting me ramble on LOL.

I had IUI with Clomid, and got pregnant on the first try, but had an ectopic, and lost one tube. Then I tried IUI again, and got pregnant on the first try and had my son. Now I'm trying IUI w/ Clomid one more time, and hopefully it'll work right away again. I am currently 3 dpo.
Update: I'm now 11 dpo, and tested this morning, but got a BFN.
