Hi, I am a member of Feb DDC and I am going to try to BF/pump for this baby. I was wondering should I buy a used pump (ebay)? Are they easy to sterilize? Should I buy replacement parts? I was going to rent one from the hospital to start with....that's the same as used one I guess I just assume they sterilize it really well???
the one I"m looking at is a Medela double electric pump.

I personally would not buy a used pump off of ebay. The milk backs into the tubes into the motors, and can contaminate your milk as well. Hospital pumps are steralized very very well, and I believe they are taken apart to be clean. My childs safety and well being is worth more than saving a few bucks on a pump. There are too many things that can be contracted from bodily fluids, and babies immune systems arent fully developed to protect them yet. If you DO buy a used pump off of ebay, please please buy all new replacement parts, and make sure as much as possible that the milk doesnt back up into the tubing and the motor.

Personally I would not buy or use a used pump either...

Hospital grade pumps are closed motor pumps, meaning the pump is sealed off (or something like that) which is why they can be used by multiple people.

The PP is correct about the milk contamination issue, not only that but "spores" can enter the tubing, even if you buy new tubing, as there could be old contaminated milk on the motor.

When I was in the hospital I was using a Medela Lactina, when I rented one to take home they gave me an Ameda but I had to buy the kit which was about $45.
