I'm looking at buying a used pump, is it possible to sterilize the tubing or should I buy replacement? The one I have found is a Lansinoh double electric, does anyone have it and what other parts might need replaced (trying to get an idea of what I will need to buy).

Also, does anyone have this pump and have anything negative to say about it?

From my understanding, it is not a good idea to buy a used pump b/c there is no way to truly sterilize the membranes. Regular pumps are different than hospital grade pumps. I found a couple of articles for you to read.

i was given a used medela PIS from a friend of a friend. i bought new tubing and the accessory kit. i know they say not to buy a used pump, but i have my PhD in microbiology, and i know that diseases cannot be passed through a pump.

just be careful, i bought a used pump first but didn't try it out until after Kaiden was born, and the motor was so weak i ended up tossing it out after one use.

my main worry would be that the motor has been used to much and isnt as strong or effective. so if you do choose to buy it make sure it wasnt used to death.

That's nice to read ... because I also brought a used PIS and brought new tubing. I figured I would be using it when Alex was at daycare and exposed to so many germs anyway that the risk was negligible.

My personal opinion is that the whole "never buy a used pump" is a bunch of propoganda from the pump companies so that they can sell more pumps. JMO.

at my prenatal BF class, i just laughed when the LC said - if you get a used pump from your neighbor and think you know her, but it turns out she has hepatitis C or HIV, you wouldn't want to take the risk of passing the virus on through BM. i laughed out loud!!! do you know how long viruses live on surfaces? it varies from virus to virus, but it's not long ... we're talking hours. i work in an HIV vaccine lab. i know a little about all this stuff. and i got a used pump!

Wow Tela! That is good to know!

PS: And yes I'd go used but replace the tubing. But that's more cause i don't know how well someone else would sterilize... I guess i just don't like the idea of someone's old crusty milk on my tubes, lol!
