I work full time - and am pumping 5x a day (3x at work, once in the morning, once before bed) I nurse maybe once a day (if that)

So - my pump schedule looks like this:

6:00
8:30
11:30
2:30
8:30

I'm thinking about cutting one out. I would like to continue to pump until lo is 12 months. He will be 9 months in 2 days.

Will it harm my supply? So - this is what I would like to do:

6:00
10:00
2:00
8:30

Ped told me I could cut back. I normally get around 25 ounces a day - he takes an average of 24 a day. I will supplement if need be (have been since he was born)

What do you think?

I wouldn't but I was always petrified of losing my supply. If you're not so worried about needing to supplement, then it's probably not such a big deal and totally your call. Just remember it's much harder to build up your supply again if it does suffer.

I agree with Shortlette, I also was paranoid with losing my supply so I didn't cut back my pumping sessions until my LO was about 11 months old. But I also don't have a hug freezer supply either to fall back on.

Good luck with whatever you choose:]

You can probably start cutting back, especially if you don't mind supplementing a bit if you have to. And depending on your kid - I cut back Juliet's breastmilk by a couple ounces while I was at work when she was 9 months old. She was doing great eating solids and I knew she'd still be able to make up for it by nursing at home if she wanted/needed. Also some people start introducing a bit of whole milk (cow's milk) a month or two before they turn a year, some people wait until the magic date of the birthday, so whatever you (or your dr) are comfortable with for that, you may be able to replace one serving with cow's milk soon-ish.

The doctor seemed to think it was ok for me to start cutting back on pumping. He takes solids VERY VERY well. I finally having him taking pretty much all EBM since he has dropped his intake dramatically. But - I am ok with supplementing - especially since I've done so well with getting him milk for so long!

I will keep thinking about it this week. He'll be 9 months tomorrow - so I can stop cutting back maybe next week. Thanks so much for your input ladies!

It's so hard to know exactly how much they need! I would like to cut down on my night nursing (DS still gets up twice at night!) but I am not able to pump much at work, so I'm afraid if I do he won't get enough. I wish there was a real answer to this! You have done a great job getting all the way to 9 months. I'm sure he will be fine and you can always supplement.
