I was just wondering if your midwife tests for GD??

Mine does, but you have the option to waive it too, just like all their testing....I think we are going to waive this test, any suggestions?

Mine only does it if I show any signs of having GD. Other then that, it isn't a test she does. I'm glad because if she did it, I'd waive my right to do it.

The American Diabetic Association is actually against routine testing for it!

I had it with my first two pregnancies but not the last two and plan to decline the test again this time. I know that my midwife will look for other signs and certainly take it if she had concerns but so far I haven't had any issues.

I think she'll poke my finger then take it from there. She said the glucose test is inaccurate. I don't think she does it.

I guess I'm the odd ball here. My midwife does the GTT - no fasting and with Grape Juice instead of those horrible syrup drinks. I'll be having mine in a little under 2 weeks.

Ok, another question....the only reason I am almost tempted to take it, is due to a small family history of diabetes (I believe two of my great grandparents and a great aunt, have diabetes) No family had GD at least that they were aware of back then So should I or do you think it'd be ok to waive it and to keep any eye for any signs of it (which I know my midwives will do) and then if there are signs go from there?

GD doesn't mean you will have diabetes when your older and having diabetes when your older doesn't mean they had GD. So unless its a family history of young diabetes, type one, or GD I think you should be ok,,,,,,talk with you family and find out when they got it (where they overweight) what type they had, and if they had it while preggers. Then talk to your m/w about it and she what she recommends.

There is some interesting research out there on the GD front... you might want to check some links out.

http://rixarixa.blogspot.com/2008/01...ent-on-gd.html

http://parenting.ivillage.com/pregnancy/pc...0,,9z3m,00.html

And last but certainly not least here's the full text of the study done in Hamilton (Ont.), Canada where screening for GD was discontinued in 1989. It was published in the American Journal of Epidemiology.

http://aje.oxfordjournals.org/cgi/content/...pid;152/11/1009

Conclusion:

No related temporal trends for fetal macrosomia, cesarean delivery, or other diabetes-related complications were observed, regardless of screening policy. The authors concluded that the substantial increase in gestational diabetes in Canada is an artifact caused by universal screening, with no evidence of beneficial effects on pregnancy outcomes.
