I just thought I would update all you lovely ladies - especially those who kindly gave their advice after I posted my query after getting a ranting doctor telling me i was bad to consider a home birth.
I wasnt getting much luck getting any info on Midwives here in Ohio but when I mentioned it a friend she told me about a group she had heard about. Well anyway I investigated it, took ages to get my insurance company to agree that they could be covered (the company initially said sure you can have a home birth if you have a physician present!!! doh) , and finally met the team yesterday for an evaluation session to see if it could work for us all.
I met a senior midwife and midwife team along with a trainee who were all lovely. They gave me a tonne of information and asked me about my prior births and we have decided that home birth is definatly a good way for me to go! They were so supportive of individual care and choices for the mum. They give you lots of information on what your choices are and then help you get them (ie if you want a vitimin K shot they have a nurse who can do it but it is your choice etc etc). They obviously had strong leaning s to the more natural aspects of birth which just suited me perfectly as this was exactly what I wanted.
So I am defintley going to switch to their care from my induction mad, csection advocating OB practice.
The only snag is that I have to pay all their fees up front of the birth and THEN once baby is born claim the 80% the insurance covers back from the insuramce company. The OB was more expensive but I actually only had to pay the 20% in the first place so less to find now.
Im just so very happy about it. I have very fast births and this one could well be under an hour and the stress of trying to get me and 2 toddlers to the hospital in a hurry was very daunting. I was also worried about trying to have to fight to avoid drugs and intervention etc in the hospital! Thanks for encouraging me to look into it for myself rather than relying on this out of date - silly doctor.
